Make sure you didn't buy one of those oil caps with a pinhole on the top. They will do that.
Check the seal. Mine is so tight it is actually hard to remove, and I have heard that from others as well. A loose one will leak badly.
Those are the first and obvious things to look at.

The oil cap is very tight, hard to get off, so that's not the problem. Where is the PCV valve located?
Under the air intake ton the right side of the valve cover runs right next to it and into valve cover. A broken pcv valve will disperse a large amount of oily gunk all over the front right(if your looking at the engine) of the engine compartment. Just start your car, pop the hood, wait a minute or two if you smell a sort of rich exhaust it's a broken pcv valve.

Though it doesn't sound like one oil never came through my oil cap.

Sounds like too much oil in engine?
