Gasket isn't a brake job. This requires organization skills. Keeping disparate parts arranged, recalling the sequence of what went where.
Make sure that guru is not just encouraging but nearby and available if you're stumped.
Issue I've often run into:
I cannot complete the job in time orginally allocated, When I return a days or a week later, parts-removal which was soooo logical become pieces from a jigsaw puzzle.
Ps: I'd still make the attempt unless I could find a reasonable Indy. I'd imagine 3hrs labor for someone w/experience.

Looks pretty straight forward. Have had the m156 guru give me some words of encouragement since and I think I will give it a go myself.

I’ve done the brakes on my R129, struts, dizzy cape, EHA valve, breather hoses etc. w211 airstrut, brakes, control arms, ball joints as well.

I am competent, I think the whole thing about exposing the camshaft and the view of finding what headbolts is bugging me out lol.

This m156 guru is on YouTube has a cult following.

Also the Indy I went and asked was only a few hundred odd dollars cheaper than the dealership.

I have enjoyed Iain Tyrrell's videos on his auto restoration. Here he goes into detail on the 300SL Gullwing.

... I should follow the article's advice ;) , should use my 2 garage queens regularly being at the ripe age of 67 and "semi-retired".

I do have a daily driver 2006 Toyota Altis (Corolla in the USA), with 280,000 kilometers on the odometer. I take the "garage queens" every 2 weeks, on a 24 kilometer run.

... just sharing

I could give a dozen stories about people who just hoarded cars, expecting them to appreciate. Back in 1976, the Porsche 930 Turbo was a game-changer. You couldn't get one at a dealer without waiting a year - or more.
There was a story of some guy who bought 6, put them in a warehouse expecting to retire on them in 20 years.

Guess what they were worth in 1996? :)

If you enjoy the car, drive it!

It will appreciate it too :)

I took my SL into the Mercedes dealer to talk to my part dept friends. Been trying to fix this misaligned “phone door“ in the dashboard that is driving me nuts.

in the parking lot was one of their first EV cars. A factory rep brought it over.

I think it was interesting but more as a curiosity.

I think part of our romance of cars-let’s say most of the reason for our romance - the are the various sensory inputs.

The melodious sound of the engine in the quickness of the steering - The way the suspension talks with the road.

I drove a Tesla model S and had the feeling it was just a plush golf cart.

anyway here is the Mercedes EQS along with my venerable SL 500.

anybody know if that glasses compartment has an adjustable door or do you have to tear out the whole dashboard?

inside are two Philips screws, loosen and remove and then try jiggling the whole compartment from its inside and see if it gets into proper place. When putting the screws back, don't over tighten. Leave them kinda lose kinda finger tight

Thank you! That had been bugging me for over a year every time I got in the car.
There’s actually three screws. The two that are visible just hold the back plate and may or may not contribute to the alignment but once you take off the back plate there’s a third one in the lower left corner.

you wouldn’t think those little screws could align it but they did their magic.

thanks again sushipaste!

Market was so strange in the mid-late 90's! And 951 you could literally get for a "song"... Times and markets have changed!

Everything in my house is being driven. 2 cars in the garage, 2 outside, but all get the work out...

Old and trusty C280, had it most of it's life... "White Pegasus". One of the most reliable car's I've ever owned, and possibly one of the best, well kept and preserved (while still frequently driven) W202s

XC70, all weather, camping, off road beast, "The Tank"

944 S2, "Red Sonja"

And the my blood sweat at tears, the "Red Devil"

All unique in their own ways, and enjoyable to drive equally (with purpose)

Eyeglass door..
On our 2 SL's....none adjustable. Removeable, though...a challenge.
Over the years..sun and heat has warped the door making opening a challenge when pushing the button to open. Took a wooden paint stirrer stick...broke off about 3 inches, closed the door and pried up the middle just enough to slide the wood paint stirrer under the cover. Left it in place for the summer...heat and sun eventually "re-warped" the cover to its original shape.
Or lay the wood between the cover and bottom and try closing the lid...some have used a heat gun.

I have had this annoying squeak in the SL for years and could never isolate it.

I have thought it’s just a part in the convertible top frame that needed lubrication.

squeaks are the hardest thing to trace.

well yesterday I just happen to push down on the left front corner of my hood and lo and behold there was a squeak.

don’t know if it is “the squeak “.

But the hood stop rubber was all dried out and hardened and I thought I would just order some new ones.

this is a simple part used in Mercedes-Benz models for decades.

and they no longer officially stock it.

The Daimler today is not the Daimler I knew in the early 70s when you could come in with virtually any Mercedes and order a part.

anyway my parts friend at the dealer discovered that he could order some residue and they are also available on eBay.

and I hope this takes care of “the squeak”

The squeak from the hood area may also be caused by the dry locking mechanisms of the hood (x2 per car), that's rather common. A bit of a proper lubricant and the squeak is gone. Same on both of our R129's
