Good progress this week as the body's almost ready for primer, incl. windscreen frame which came out quite good. After careful consideration and following inspection of the sills inside, we decided to replace the rears as they were patched up in the past, but not perfect. The replacements that came froms SLS are fantastic quality, I used the front sills a few years ago and I'm still happy with how they came out.
Thanks gents @Bauk18@benztag - I may have difficulties recognizing her myself! So far so good, we absorbed 1 week delay vs the plan due to the sills but otherwise pretty much on track and progressing better than I had anticipated. I'll be dropping the exhaust today or Monday to respray it black, as its Bosal unit rather than MB.
Looks like an update is overdue, so some comments and pics below. Overall, we’re on track!
Welding completed, both rear sills done and bottoms flooded with POR 15. Additionally, I’ll spray the insides of both sills with rust inhibitor. The good news is there were no other nasty surprises, just a couple of spots here and there.
Picked up all the bits & pieces from the sandblasters, came out well with no rusty holes!
Wheels dropped off to a local company, after careful consideration I decided to outsource this job - the guy will chemically strip them, powder coat with primer, spray with Astral Silver 735 and finally apply a layer of clear powder coat. I’ve seen some of his work, I don’t want to get excited but it did look pretty - looking at the pic below there’s surely room for improvement!
New reg plates in time period correct colors and font await
A brief update on alloys: they were dipped and stripped, and came out pretty much 100% clean so no invasive glass blasting will be required. What’s even better is that they’re very original, no evidence of damage or welding - just a few scratches around the rim. Not bad for 41 year olds They should be ready by mid next week.
The speed at which you're progressing is impressive. You've done more in one month than I've done in two years! The picture showing all those layers of paint looked just like my car. I likened it to one of those large jawbreakers. Multiple layers of primer, paint, primer, paint, etc. I'm not quite done but plan to be this summer now that I have a job with months of free time during the year.
Thanks for the kind words Nate, I'm determined to see this through and get the old lady back on the road by May. Also, I'm not doing al the work myself - power of team work! You car looks great - is white the original color or did you fancy a change?
My guy was away for a few days so not much progress, other than refitting & aligning doors and trunk - it’s shaping up nicely, she’ll be straight like an arrow I also dropped the exhaust as I’ll respray it black for the factory look.
While my painter is holidaying I moved on to a few other jobs - first one being rebuilding the rear clusters. Both lamps were covered with black paint when the boot was sprayed with rust inhibitor, not looking great!
So I wet sanded them until the overspray was gone, and sprayed them with Alpaca Grey vinyl paint that I had left from the CLK project - it sticks pretty good to plastic, too, and coincidentally is a very close match to what the covers would have looked like in 1979.
I also polished the aluminum frames and steam cleaned the plastic lenses which came out pretty good.
Next, new seals were fitted and the clusters re-assembled, ready to go back when the time comes - all that’s missing are brackets and nuts which are being yellow zinc plated. Moving onto headlights next, but in the meantime it’s 🍻 time
I would like to repair the external keyway as part of my SLC's passenger side door.
I currently have the window out repairing the split and rusty bottom glass carrier channel and also re-gluing the guide blocks to the window.
Now seems like the perfect time to remove the door handle and...
Just had the misfortune of breaking a timing chain guide on my 350SL causing timing to jump and destroy my engine. I've found a reconditioned similar year 450SL engine/trans & ecu. Is this a straight replacement or are the mods required? Thanks!
When I am driving my car the feel and performance of the steering just doesn't seem right to me. It's hard to put my finger on it. The car will go where I want it to go but it seems when driving down a straight road the car wanders to the left or right. This isn't the feel of road camber, it's...
I finally finished putting a speedometer schematic together. The attached schematic and details are for 1984 280SL euro car with an electronic speedometer. I have 2 versions. The posted version does not have datasheets. You probably don't need to know the exact characteristics of each component...
