I know I shouldn’t have, but I managed to convince myself that sometimes life presents us with opportunities too good to pass on - and so Christmas is early this year! 🤩 I hope to install it this weekend, and I sure hope it works - still looking for some good ol’ Phil Collins cassettes in my 1980’s secret stash.

Ohh, now I understand why you're pulling your Europa. :) Very nice! Still "aftermarket" too, so you will need to update once it's installed.

Seem to recall that you can get a mod from Becker to allow MP3 or Bluetooth input?

I think my SL might have had a Becker at one time. Might still have a manual, but that's about all. Or come to think of it, I may have sent to someone who was looking for one.

Thanks @benztag - yep, couldn't say no to that baby! Europa remains as backup :)

Graham, yes Becker has that option and I've that aux input installed in Europa - I'll move it to Mexico. If you have the manual I'd be very interested in it.

I did go and look - I can still "see" that manual sitting in the glove box! I thought it could be that it was in the 300D. But not in either place. I have vague idea that I mailed that manual to a member here. So sorry :(

What I did find, was the Becker warranty card for the original SL radio (March 1972). It was actually a Europa. Option Code 515. That radio had been replaced with a Blaupunckt by the time I bought the car in 1989. It eventually died and I put is a Sony that came with the larger speakers.

The 85 300D radio was also a Becker (Grand Prix 612). Also replaced with 'modern' radio.

I still have not figured out how to operate either radio. They are different, so I just punch buttons at random until something happens ;)

No worries Graham, I didn't get my hopes as you did mention you likely had helped someone else - I'll keep an eye out for this on flebay, would be nice to have some paperwork.

Do you still have the Grand Prix? They're worth a small fortune by the looks of it. Some interesting reading astralsilber.de - Becker-Radios and BLACK FOREST LLC - Becker Model History - amazing to see how some organizations rise and fall, pity it happened to Becker.

I haven't seen the Grand Prix lying around here lately. I think it had failed and I probably threw it out. Same with the Blaupunkt.

I have a non-functional Grand Prix on my bench waiting for me to make up my mind if I want to get it fixed and have the upgrades installed at the same time.

To be honest, I never found that radio to be that great. Some of the controls were less than intuitive! It was on my 85 300D which doesn't need to be period correct ;) And on those old diesels, it is the engine sound that is more important :)

I also found some of the controls a bit lacking in clarity but I really didn't care. When I turned it on the antenna came up and sound came out of the speakers... that's all I needed the radio to do.

Out with the old, in with the… old  The radio is fantastic, made a huge difference to speaker volume and sound quality compared to Europa. I tested it briefly & everything seems ok: antenna goes up and down, cassettes play, wunderbar auto-seek picks up all stations - happy days!!

Looks fantastic! But it seems your steering wheel is on the wrong side. ;)

Thanks a million Hijak! I don't understand your comment though, surely the steering wheel is on the right side? 😉🤣

At any rate here’s some night shots, I think the radio goes well with the new incandescent bulbs behind the zebrano panels 👍

Miko,

I have a Becker Mexico cassette salvaged from a 116. I opened it up to see how things worked. That channel search is a motor driven mechanical wonder. Your post motivates me to get mine restored. That radio looks fantastic - glad to read that it sounds good too.

Thanks Brad. Yes, Becker was defo at the top of their game back in the day - it's a shame they re no longer around. Defo worth restoring it while expertise is still available, I hope my serviced specimen will last a few years / decades 😉 here's some ore pics if you want a looksee 1979 Mercedes 450SL
