Were customers given the option of velour or German loop carpet when ordering R107's new from the dealership?

I have only seen one 450SL with velour carpeting. The car was prestine & had not been restored so it was obvious that it was supplied with velour carpet from the factory when new.

I've got a 450SL with original velour carpeting. I took it out to a Mercedes carpet place and the guy looked all over it and pronounced it original, but he said he'd never seen a 78 with the velour before. He asked if it was a European car, but I've got the paperwork and it was originally sold in Long Beach. <shrug> Maybe it was a special order.

From what I've seen, 72-79 had the German Loop and 80-89 had the Feintuft Velour. Now Scott states that he has the velour and his is a 78, so maybe there was an option on carpet types.

My 79 also has velour and it is original.

Actually 78 SL's and on came with factory velour carpeting not 79, so yes in 78 it was original, I know this because I manufacture Mercedes upholstery and i deal with these kind of questions all day long.

Sounds like someone needs a vacation
