I've heard that rule#1 for mercedes odometers is don't reset the tripmeter while driving. The odometer was working when I began the prepurchase test drive of my 91k mile '82 SL and quit when I hit the reset. :(

That was and still is on the winter "to do" list. :D

Maybe we should all consider that they work great as long as the car is sitting in the driveway.

Come to think of it... that pretty much applies to me as well if you substitute "under a shade tree" for "in the driveway".

I was about to fix mine on my 79 SL, but I found a Mercedes repair place that will sell me a used one. But what I was wondering, do I try and get one with roughly the same kilometres, or do I think deceptively and get one that says less? Only I will know, and I don't EVER plan on selling it.
I'd go for honesty :D Yeah, right...

You might want to reconsider though. Even though the used one is working, it still has old plastic gears which could very easily fail quickly. If you overhaul or have someone else overhaul, you would probably be good for quite a while.
