The Odo on my car reads all Zeros. I had the Instrument Panel out today replacing a Bulb. I unplugged the 4 Wiring Harness Connectors to remove the IP, Replaced the Bulb, Plugged in the Wiring Harnesses and replaced the Instrument Panel. Now the Odo no longer displays the correct mileage, just 000000. The Tripmeter is working properly. Does this sound like something is Fried? Or a bad Connection?

Wow, so that's how to rollback the OD and you now have a new car:D

Take it out for a drive to see if the OD start moving or not.

By the way, I also pull and changed my light blub last week, and my '98 only has 2 wiring plugs in the back.

Drove around town running errands, then drove 100 miles to Ft. Lauderdale and it never started working.

Sound like something is fried. It is recommanded to disconnect the battery before working on the Instrument Cluster.
As your Tripmeter is still working, seems like all the functions are there, so hopefully it could be just a OD display problem. How to fix it I don't know.

I recall there is an Instrument Cluster erase/reset function in my Carsoft scanner. May be you should find a scanner to see if any code shows up and reset it.

Somebody rear ended my father's 2000 E430 years ago and the shop was welding a part in the rear bumper structure. Managed to fry the computer. Dealer said that there is a procedure for disconnecting the computer under those circumstances. Odometer was off.

It sounds like something got fried although I hope that I am wrong.

I would hope that you could pull the cluster without having to disconnect the battery - that doesn't make any sense - but these days who knows.

Maybe it is time to see a pro.

Are you sure that video was made by MB FACTORY and not just somebody for uTube ?

Disconnecting the -ve battery cable is specifically mentioned in the Service Procedure for removing Instrument Cluster from AllData.

whether or not mb recommends disconnecting the battery or not, it's still a good idea when working on anything electrical.

maybe they figure they don't need to mention unhooking the battery.

Sorry I can't relocate the video however it was an MB on
of the same makeup as all their other demos ie lowering the soft top, replacing the soft top etc, etc..it would seem like a good idea to disconnect the battery tho given the sensitivity of these cars electrical systems

After a couple hundred miles of driving and the Odometer not working and staying at 000000 miles, it started working tonight - starting over at 000001. I am wondering if I plug a scanner into the computer under the hood, if the true mileage will be stored in the ECM. A buddy of mine has a shop and a scanner, so I am going to get him to plug in and check.

Usually people pay to have a 'Haircut' (motor trade parlance for winding back the speedo) ;)

As this practice is illegal, it's referred to and advertised as 'Dashboard Engineering' :D

you're complaining, you now have the lowest mileage '96 sl on the planet.
