I thought I had a MUSEUM NEW WING thread somewhere, but I didn't find it with a search. So, I'll put some recent shots here. It is closed in and full of trucks, but It still has unfinished details, I think. There is raw OSB in evidence, and I don't think that they are Hillbilly enough to run with that. We'll see.

They essentially doubled the size of the place, and wiped out the parking all at once. I'm sure they must have parking close by somewhere.

I came across an article in German where they were championing their use of locally sourced Douglas Fir for the siding and interior structure. I'm not so sure that it is a great solution for the siding, as the original building is looking pretty rough, but they stuck with it for the new wing. I understand supporting the local industry, but long term, I think they should have gone with steel panels for the whole building. They didn't call me for my opinion, or I missed the call.

While I'm at it, I'd clear both buildings out and lay down a nice epoxy coating on the floors. The sealed and buffed concrete floors are a nice look, but years of leaky UNIMOGs have left their mark, and the stained floor does not enhance the premier UNIMOG Museum experience. Minor points.

Here are some fairly recent photos.

A look back to the early days at the museum. One of the volunteer 'DOKA Drivers' ( UNIMOG engineer in his day job) told me that they had to re-do the surface of the concrete up-and-over hump three times before they got it right.

The Museum had a 'Sky Ride' observation capsule that they hoisted up 50 meters for a look during the finishing stages. I like the 'Moving Mountains' tape in the foreground. The silver MBU on the cage of rocks is later, after the siding started to age .

Same place, different photo. In Germany, I'd say, based on the sign in the lower left - ' Steigung 55% ' = 'Grade (or Pitch) 55 %'.

The curious thing for me is the ramp that the 411 is climbing in the foreground.

It emerges from below ground level and appears to be concrete, if the vertical form board patterns on the side are what I think they are.
Then, it appears to cantilever over and stop in mid-air with a blocking beam, without any support legs visible in the photo.
So, the question is, did Mercedes-Benz engineer and build this dramatic feature ? It would have been quite the entrance to have the UNIMOG appear out of the basement and chug up the slope.

I tend to think that they did, as just happening to find such an existing feature on the grounds of of Trade Fair location seems very unlikely. It could be a pedestrian bridge or something, but I'd expect handrails, and the environment does not seem to warrant a low flyover that would block traffic over a certain height. That would not make any sense on the fair grounds with machines moving around to their respective display plots. Note the cranes and the VW sign in the background. What is happening out of frame to the right would settle it, but these are the only two photos that I have of this display so far.

Does it seem like a lot of work and construction expense for a Trade Show ? Yes, it does, but remember that they laid track and craned in a Switcher engine just to have a tug-of-war with a UNIMOG at another installation.

I hope to find more photos.
