I am tone deaf too.
Seriously. It may or may not be a sign that it is going. Might be prudent to start looking for a replacement. That way you can don't have to pay the price in an emergency.

Guys, two or three times over the last couple of months the fuel pump has made a medium pitched hum for 5 to 10 seconds after start up. Has anyone experienced this, is it on its way out?
Old rule of thumb... If your pump(s) 'a humming, you'll soon be a thumbing!

I am still running on the original fuel pump on our 72. At times it has hummed. But for at least a year, I haven't heard a squeak out of it. Don't know what causes it - may be some sort of harmonic vibration but don't know what initiates it.

BTW, I did buy a spare pump just in case, but see no need to replace it. I have had pump out once in 21 years and have cleaned it, but not much to clean.

Regarding filters, I recall every 30,000 miles being the recommended interval, but stand to be corrected!

It was a hot July morning and I had just pulled onto the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, preparing to cross the Potomac from Maryland into Virginia...

mines been humming for last 2 1/2 yrs, in that time I've done 30,000 km's without a problem ( have a spare just in case)
I change my filter every year, probably a bit of overkill i know, but at least I know my injection system is always performing at optimum levels.

That's what I thought, although mine may have been humming much longer prior to my ownership.

as much trouble as I've had with my fuel system, if I didn't hear the hum at "key on" my paranoia would be running rampant. it's an electric motor pumping fuel, I suspect that noise is alowed, What is a hum? how loud is too loud? I guess it takes a trained ear to hear "normal/abnormal". knowing your own car is priceless.........................
