Sorry B22B, I'm a lazy bastard so in my opinion you don't have to remove anything except the speedo panel to do a touch up.

HOWEVER, I seem to remember that you wanted to do a complete colour change, so panel removal would be almost mandatory I guess. Others have removed panels it and will probably chime in.

Here's the link to the general painting guide - it's a few pages back on the big thread - permalink 552

cheers - there's a buelwinkle pack - see how I go.
Touching up the red today as a trial
I have 227 scarlet
Also bought the anthracite for the SLK32, but if I choose to change the colour of the SLK32 (wary due to keeping it stock) viponds suggested I go over it in white first then the scarlet.
It will also require me to swap out the door liners between cars. Since the red leather is inlaid in the doors and the seat backs will have to be done as well.

I'm going to use the preval spray packs imported 6 from US + 2 bottles for $60 landed - cheap

Dog ate my homework.....

Well - I took a heap of fotos but instead of copy....I cut....
run them to a new folder and I couldnt paste....files gone....

oh well - here's how far I got - going away for the week - so the parts will have 4 days in the sun to bake dry before I reinstall.....
the prevals worked fine - although they get a little cold and take a few seconds to settle down and stop sputtering. You have to use 2 'cause they freez up and so you have a 2nd one on the ready and use it whilst the original one warms up again....
Used about 150mls of Viponds 227 (scarlet)
Fotos of sprayer and viponds pain added.

hopefully - I havent done something BAD....
the windows were down when I finished at night and so for security I had to run them up .....with the dash out...I had to reconnect the battery....
flashers flashed and key wouldnt stop 'em - I figured it was an alarm of some sorts....got the windows up and disconnecte the battery.
I dont think there was anythind shorted and f so the fuses should look after that. Needless to say - I have a few days wait before I find out.....
Gotta fix the reversing light issue and connect the radio aerial (never was connected) ....before I put her all back together....
Getting ready for resale....

Jury's Back - Verdicts In!!!! Absolute Smash Dash!

finally finished
Very happy - or "chuffed" as Oberoi predicted....
(shame I gotta pull the inst. cluster back out) - but hey....one step at a time.

And might I say I got to learn a little more abut these babys...
Now I gotta move onto the SLK32 and do a little red number on that one.....Not so keen on the anthracite....too plain for a sports car.

BTW - I fixed the Reversing light issue whilst I was in there - very good!

I'm not aware of the product - but if it is "as descibed" it is for tool handle applications....that tells me it may be a little thick.
You just need the standard 50um to cover the old paint and chips whilst still retaining the rippled/leather texture from the PVC below.
Also - you dont want a gloss, the more matt the better so as you dont show off too many imperfections.

Dont want to discourage "trying somethig different" -but you gotta choose your battles.

The aerosol version goes on very thin. They also offer thinners if you prefer to compress and spray your own. The typical finish is matte, but they have 'glossifiers'.
Here's a video of someone spraying it on wheels - there are thousands of them on youtube. People love it because it will peel off if wanted.

Check out www.dipyourcar.com for details if you're interested.

I'll be giving it a shot once I choose a color.

I just got my Scarlett 227 delivered last night so I will be having a bit of a touch up session this evening.

I am not planning on painting whole panels as I only have little chips here and there (roughly the size of a skittle) and just little wearing spots on edges etc.

Viponds sent me a brush with the paint so I will give that a whirl.

Any advice on what to clean the surface with first as to ensure the paint sticks?

This thread has probably hijacked the original thread in stickies....have a quick search
all you wanted to know is there.....
basically soapy water first, methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) 2nd, dont touch and paint 3rd.

Protective finish for Viponds?

Some members have commented that the Viponds finish is not overly durable.

As I prepare to repaint my SLK including the door handles, I wonder if anyone has tried applying a water-based mat clear acrylic finish on top of the Viponds to increase wearability?

I note that VOLICO.de - von Liebenstein Consulting - EU SHOP ( the german provider of SLK touchup paint) recommends a thin layer of protective lacquer.

I have used Rustoleum clears, both crystal, and matte. They works very well on anything I have tried, and over any type of paint or stain....but never tried Valponds.
I did wife's SLK...entire interior with black, and then matte clear...came out fantastic...if I may say.
Good Luck

After someone ran into me in a parking lot, the well reputed and well established body shop told me they use water based exterior paint now.
