I got a P1700 code on my 1996 s320 6cyl. It says it is transmission reverse problem. What is this? I cleared it and the cel went off.

It can be a vacuum leak, vacuum modulator, or bowden cable... Since you have a 96, the o-rings around the modulator are probably brittle hard..

I also have a '96 s320 and was getting the same code. I cleared it and it came back after a month or so. What I found is that there is a vacuum line that had come off on the rear of the intake manifold/throttle body. It looked like it may have been knocked off while changing the oil filter. I reinstalled it and haven't got the code in 6 months now.
