Hi
Can anyone tell me if my E240 1998 V6 Mercedes Classic is OBD II compliant and what tool can be recommended to read out fault codes. Both USB compliant programs as well as scanners.
Thanks
E240Black:)

OBD-II is federally mandated, but the "federal" is the United States. It is required only for those cars destined for sale in the US. I don't think the E240 would fit that bill. The EU has their own version (EOBD?) but it wasn't mandated until 2000 or thereabouts. I can't imagine that MB would have put OBD-II in a non-US car, but if they did the port will be there. If there is a cable connected to it (on the back side, running up behind the dash) then it may actually be active. But I doubt it's even there, that's an extra expense you'd think they would want to avoid.

Other than that the MB's star diagnostics interface should be available but that requires dedicated hardware and software. You may look at ebay to see if anyone has a cable and software that you could use with a serial connector on a laptop...otherwise you're stuck with a dealer or good indie.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

EOBD

was 2001.Some euro models had the obd2 port before 2000 so look under the dash for the 16 pin port.Scanners are sold if you do have the port and it should say on a tag in the engine compartment if the car is obd compliant.
Do you have a cel engine light on?that would be one clue:thumbsup:

OBD II Compliant - add info

Thanks for all the very helpfull answers concerning the OBD II compliancy on my Merc. The only info I can add is that the car was bought straight out of Stuttgart and in the engine compartments right side is the 38 Pin socket which led me to think that it might be OBD I or II compliant.
I have checked Ebay and some seller advice me to buy a so called U 381 Scanner with the 38 to 16 Pin adaptercable, but I am still in doubt if this will actually give me the possibility to read out the fault and diagnostic codes.
Once again - being a newcommer - great advise and very helpfull to have some of the experienced Merc owners help.

Have you checked for the port under the drivers dash

above where you left knee would be?
although required after 2000 in Europe some cars had the port before 2000.

You can also try Carsoft 7.4 - that normally has both a 38 point plug and OBD II plug.
