Just wondering how many SLKs were manufactured year by year since the beginning. Can't have been too many as I go for weeks without seeing one on the road, but maybe the hills of North Carolina are not the best place to be seeing them. Also, have they all come out of the factory in Bremen? One more small question--is there an internet available article from Road and Track or other good car magazine reviewing the 320 from 2001? All newbie questions I'm sure.

Welcome! I don't know if they are internet available (I bought the Brookland Books, "Road Test Limited Edition Mercedes CLK & SLK", and "Road & Track Mercedes-Benz SL-SLK-CLK Portfolio 1990-2003") but there was a short article in R&T June 2000 and an SLK320/SL500 Comparison in R&T Jan 2001. Also articles in "Car Magazine" (Apr 2000), "Autocar" (Apr 26 2000 & Aug 2 2000), and "Automobile Magazine" (June 2000). I don't know about production numbers but that would be interesting.

The info on MBUSA's site is completely wrong...

The total they give for model 1998 is actually the total for calendar year 1997.

The total they give for model year 1999 is actually the number of manual transmission models for 1999.

The total for 2000 might be correct.

I have data broken down by calendar month...

Unfortunately, you cannot accurately get model year numbers because new models arrive in the middle of the month and sometimes old models don't get shipped to dealers right away. Anyway, rounded to the nearest thousand, they are approximately:

1998: 12000 (model year lasted 18 months)
1999: 12000
2000: 8000 (model year lasted 10 months)
2001: 15000 (model year lasted 14 months)
2002: 10000
2003: 7000
2004: 5000

Please remember that these are only approximate. In fact, they are likely to be off by up to about 8%.

The total for all years of the R170 is 68234 through June 2004. That's almost exactly what Kirill posted.

I have the exact monthly US sales from Jan 1997 through October 2004 if you're interested.

I read somewhere that the R170 sold 302 thousand examples.

The R171 has so far sold over 30 thousand examples. I'd give it another year, and we'll be at 400 thousand SLK's sold worldwide [:D] (what with the 280 being released as well as the TriTurbo)

I read somewhere that between 1996-2004 there have been manufactured 308 000 vehicles. I will run into that site for sure one of these days, just can't remember exactly where I saw it.
