My local dealer here in Chicago said that while they are selling ok right now, considering the anticipation of the CLS, it has flopped. He said that he had 25 orders for new ones and 20 of them got in the car and said it was much to small and canceled thier order. I have to say, that while it is good looking it is certainly not timeless and that it is a look that will get old fast.
I guess MErcedes had not a huge risk factor being that they borrowed a lot from the hugely succesful E Class.

I think it is a timeless design. CLS is the most beautiful see-dan on the planet. If MSRP is $62K and $72K (500 and 55 respectively), why are the 55s bringing over $100K on ebay?
I'm hoping they'll do a CLS320.

Agreed all around. First new Chyrsler-era Benz to truely make me lust like the superior 80-s -mid 90's models. Even then, I'd STILL buy an older used MB, but I DO want NEW models that i'd be willing to buy used in the future too. THIS (and a W209 CLK) is definately the one(s). The current W220, W210, about anything of 'em I don't even want at a used steal.

BTW, It's WAAAAY too early to call the a car a flop, succes, or anything. It JUST came out.

I agree that it is too early to judge the success or failure, but to me it is just ok at best. WAY to small. But my dealer just gavfe me some of the real world facts, and it has not sold that well. I was suprised to hear that!

Whoever said the CLS is "much too small" simply doesn't know what they are talking about. Here is a comparison of the CLS vs. the E takken from another post.
CLS500 E-Class500 CLS diff.
wheelbase 112.4 112.4 0
OLgth" 193.0 189.7 +3.3"
OHght" 54.7 57.2 -2.5
Owidth" 73.7 71.3 +2.4
Track"
F 62.5 61.4 +1.1
R 63.0 61.1 +1.9
CofDrag .30 .27 -.3
Curbwt. 3992 3812 +180lbs
Hdroom"
F 36.9 34.7 +2.2"
R 36.1 37.7 -1.6
Legroom"
F 42.1 41.9 +.2"
R 35.0 35.6 -.6
Shldroom"
F 56.3 56.4 -.1
R 56.0 56.1 -.1
Cabin c/f 104.3 97.2 +7.1
Cargo cap. 15.9 15.9 0
wheels
F 8.5x18 8x17
tires 245/40/18zr 245/45r17
R 9.5x18
tires 275/35/18zr
lmtd max spd 155mph 130mph
fuel cap. 21.1 21.1
rear ratio 2.65:1 3.07:1
trans. 7 spd. 7 spd.

So there you have it. The CLS is longer, lower, wider and weighs 180 lbs. more. The front seat is the comf place while the rear is a little tighter. The track, wheels, tires are a plus for the CLS.

it feels WAY smaller inside than the specs outlined above ,,, and afterall ,,, the "feel" --> is what matters.

I was about to trade my S Class on a CLS but I agree with you the car feels very small especially in the back. The low roofline makes entry/exit extremely awkward. In fact I found it easier to enter our CL and exit from both the CLS and CL about the same. In addition, once in the CL it feels as though there is more comfortable legroom. When you look at the dimensions the CLS has more rearleg room, hip room and less head room; but as you said the feel is not there.

I think the short windows and the "intrusive" roof line contribute to this feel. All in all it is a striking car and only time will tell of its success.

I'm not so sure they are brining over $100K. They are being offered with a reserve of over $100K; 2 totally different valuations. This is not a rare phenomenon; think back New VW Beetles way over sticker, PT cruisers same thing, when first introduced Miatas, the new SL same boat. Some people just have to be the first on the block to buy a depreciating asset. I wonder if they want to buy a bridge in Brooklyn?

Boy, I LOVE those people! Love when they pay my intial (and biggest/fastest) depreciation, luxury tax, and take care of it to factory spec, then I come in and take over for them at new Ford Taurus money, and people wonder how I can afford it! Rock on rich, new car smell people!

As for the feel of the car; yes, I've been in it, and BOY is it tight. It was challenging getting into, and I'm pretty fit. I could say my mom just giving up on entry. Ha. But I don't have any problem with becasue they DID bill it as a "4 door coupe". Total useless and absurd slogan, EXCEPT once you get in and encounter these engress/egress problems. NO, someone who needs the space of an S-class should not trade for this car. Some one who has a CLK, but sometimes wish they could put a car seat or take the guys to lunch a little more comfortably, should.

Well let me shed some light on this vehicle because I have owned it for 3 weeks now :)

As far as room is concerned there is room but it can be tight. The E-Class has MUCH more room in the REAR seat then the CLS. I have 2 friends that own E-55's. The CLS will comfortable fit folks that are 6'1" tall and less with the head-room and leg room. 6'2" and they have head-room problems and leg room problems. This is assuming the front driver and passenger are also 6'1" and smaller. If the driver or passenger are larger all bets are off.

Looks, this car is awesome! I get stopped at least 5 times a day by people telling me how gorgeous it is! Of all types, from the old white lady’s to the black dudes driving pimped Escalades. This will most definitely be a VERY popular model!

Pricing, I purchased mine Black on Black at Caliber motors in Anaheim Hills CA for sticker! $70,000... Guess I got lucky.

My opinion on the car is that it is awesome! My buddies are going to be trading in the their E-55's (at least one of them) to get the CLS-55's Unfortunately! The 7-speed and decent Torque make this car VERY fun to drive! Feels much faster then the 5.9 or 8 seconds 0-60! I give it a 10++ for looks, a 9 for driving and a 7 for interior space.

There truly at this moment is not another vehicle on available that I would rather own or that turns as many heads at this moment.

This is my person opinion based on owning the vehicle. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most of them stink!

Not doing well[xx(][xx(][xx(]

That is probably the funniest thing I've heard in a while. The car, at most if not all dealerships is selling like hotcakes and most if not all have a list of folks who are more than willing to put up a premium $5-15K just to be first on their blocks to own one. I did (AMG version) and I get stopped every 10 minutes by someone asking me about the car, or thumbs up from a whole host of people each and every day. I've owned Porsches, other Benz's and some of the hottest cars in the world and this thing makes many of those just look like last year's model.

Perhaps you suffer from CLS55 envy?

I really hope they DON'T do a CLS320 or 350 for that matter. It will only bring bottom feeders to buy these "higher end" cars and de-badge them.

I really dislike the fact that the S-Class now has the S350 and the BMW 645ci is also avail. w/ 630ci.

It feels like all these models are transplanted with Bottom Feeder engines. And since the CLS is a step below the S, they may even make a CLS240 kompressor, yuck!

enivous? NO!

I do like (not love) the looks of the car (CLS) and if I wanted one I would get one. There is not an ounce of envy. I have a 9 month old child and the baby seat barely fits in the back of my e55 and it would certainly be harder to squeeze it into the cls. All I heard was a real world report from a guy (dealer) who I have known for 20 years at a big dealership outside Chicago where there were maybe 10 on the lot (all be it none of them 55's). I could have them all for under list. He just told me his story about how many poeple (more than half) have recieved their deposits back and how many others have just put thier deposits towards the new S class due out in the fall.

they should have made like a combination of S class and CL instead of E class base in!!! i think it be better =0)

i am looking forward for the new S class!!! I think benz amd chryler shit thing is the worst thing that ever happen to benz!!!

chrysler in the other hand!! HAHAH benz is the best thing that ever happen to them!!! look at their cars now they are good looking and!! they are selling like crazy!!!!
