Hi all, our 2010 W245 B180 petrol car has a noisy engine (clattering sound). The noise is comming from below the engine. Yesterday our garage checked and say it is not the altenator or AC pump, but it comes from the lower part of the engine. Their simple solution, buy another car...

Are there any issues know with the crankshaft or bearings or something? If it is the crankshaft this means an engine out repair I suppose? If that is the case, is it easyer (or cheaper) to just replace the engine?

I will have a second opinion at another garage soon, but for now currious at your thoughts on this.

Marco

Hello Marco, best advice I can give you today is change your mechanic, not the car.
Now for the technical help, is your car manual or auto, do you have stop start and is the noise there all the time or on idle/driving only?

Thanks for the advise!

Car is manual. We have stop start system, but that is switched off at the moment. The noise is realy present when idling and driving slow (20km/h or so). Not sure when driving fast. Driving seems fine, no power loss or something.

Stop start models have a unique noise that comes from the crank shaft pulley when the rubber bonding between the 2 metal parts of the pulley starts to break. Hard to detect and not easy to replace.
More obvious on idle though.

Ok, thanks. When I go to the garage I will ask them to check. Perhaps not easy to replace, but rather that than a crankshaft or main bearing problem (I think..)
