I kept blowing fuse #8. That fuse controlls the blower motor. I rebuilt the motor with new brushes, but kept blowing the fuse.

I took matters into my own hands and used tin foil liberally on that particular fuse. Now the AC doesnt work and an AC shop informed me there is no power to the compressor. I likely melted something in the wiring of the car.?.

I dont want to pay a mechanic 80 dollars an hour to chase down the trouble, how can I do this on my own (with no real knowledge of wiring)?

sounds like you are going to have some knowledge of wiring pretty soon. get a good schematic for your car and trace the whole subcircuit. if you don't feel up to that, maybe offer a case of beer to someone else who knows the car and has a multimeter?
