Hi All, thought I'd re-post my intro in the 107 forum (see below)
My car needs front shocks ( one of the lower mounting bolts has sheared - I'd never replace just one shock, anymore than I'd replace one side of brake pads!) what do you guys recommend?

Greetings! R107 owner from UK - New to Forum

Hi Everyone,

Brand new to this forum as a member, but have used it almost daily for information since aquiring my 450SL just over a year ago.
I've attached a couple of recent pics of my car and will add some better ones soon.
She's had, so far this year;
Timing chains, tensioner and guides (big money!)
Exhaust manifold gaskets
New front subframe mounting bushes (transformed the ride)
front chassis leg repairs (never spotted them!!)
Gear selector linkage
Injection metering head overhaul
intrument cluster overhaul
Various bits and bobs

I love the car, I read on this forum that these cars are addictive, I couldn't agree more, I've owned many cars, classic and new, BMW's, (3's & 5's) Mercs (190E, C220CDI) Audi A3s & A4, and used to work for Porsche, so have driven many 911's Boxsters etc, etc, but none of them had the same type of presence and feel good factor as this car
I use it as a hobby, driven on days and weekends off, dry weather permitting where possible UK weather, remember
(My daily driver is a Volvo V70 D5SE - great car, and so much less hassle than a BMW!)
I look forward to hearing from and chatting with you in due course

Kind regards

Welcome to the asylum.
I use Bilstein. I think Sachs-Boge are the OE brand.
What year is the 450?

Sorry! Thought I'd put the year in my intro - but just realised I hadn't...it's a '78
Checked out a few prices from MB specialists and I think £175 ($275) eachis a touch steep to say the least...they are just fixed telescopic dampers after all - seems to a case of 'classic' syndrome to me - put a classic application on any old service item and 'Bingo!' the price goes up 4 fold!!
Would like to firm the ride up just a little, I appreciate the fact that these cars never had 'taught' handling by today's standards, and I like cruising in the car not throwing it about, but still... I had noticed recently that the car danced about a bit under hard braking (already had new calipers and discs (rotors) and hoses all round) so I think it's probably the shocks but surely there's a cheaper option...?

Yes, there is, up your side of the valley GSF CARPARTS might get you a pair for the price of one!

You might wish to check your subframe and engine mounts. If they have not been replaced they certainly would need to.

That is a ridiculous price even in the UK. We can buy Bilsein for less than 100 USD and Sachs-Boge for less than 70 each.

I've go KYB's on mine. Seem to do the job.

I think the Bilstein's are the firmest shocks for these. But I really don't see the point. These are hardly performance cars.
