Recently I came across a 95 s600 for a very good price, but I don't know too much specifically about these cars. It has 87,000 miles on it and currently owned by either a con artist pretending they know nothing about cars or someone who legitimately knows nothing about cars. For starters, it has a loose belt, needs an oil change bad (hasn't had one for at least 5 months and the oil is nice and brown), needs transmission fluid added and has some cylinders that aren't firing. I also hear what may be some possible shearing there could potentially be some piston rings on their way out. Normally I work with older cars and this wouldn't phase me, but my lack on knowledge on this car has me worried about these problems
I've always loved this body style and have wanted an S600 for awhile. So are these not to daunting fixes or should I just walk away from this one?

P.S I would be taking this car and flipping it after a few months, so I'm not holding it for the long term

Based on your description of the car and your lack of knowledge about it, I advise you not to walk away from it, but run as fast as you can.
Just my 2 cents of opinion.
Others on the forum may be more optimistic and helpful.

lemme guess: this one?

The car is just 2 blocks away from my house and I've seen it in person. I managed to get the guy to sell it for 2k but I decided not to get it in the end.

I just wanted to mess with the V12 motor :D

Yep thats the one. I figured 2 grand for an s600 is to good of a deal to ignore and at least look into it, but I'm trying to convince him to get it inspected before I do anything else

The ad says "running good." What else is the seller not saying. This car also has a new 6XXX### tag on it. It has been registered in CA only recently. So what is the history? Why is the seller selling so soon after bringing it into CA?

he claimed he bought it about 6 months ago but never drives it and wants to sell it because he's in construction and needs the money. By how the car looks, id say he either truely knows nothing about cars whatsoever or he's trying to con me into thinking that and not telling me something major thats wrong with the car. I'm about ready to walk away, the smart side of me is saying thats what i need to do

The car looks crappier in person than the photos show, hence making most of the parts useless or obsolete.

Even if you part out the car, you'll most likely just break even or even lose money.

Might as well keep your 2k and save the hassle.

Sadly some bloke will actually buy this car thinking he got a good deal :surrender:

Well, I believe the part about needing money if he's in construction. I'd only buy it for a labor of love. I think you'd be underwater very soon.

he's refusing to let me get it inspected, claiming he doesn't have the time for it and its not worth it for him. His logic is that if I don't buy it after inspection its a waste of his time. At this point, I wouldn't touch that car for scrap with how shady this guy is being.
However I am still in the market for a W140 preferably a 500 or maybe a 600 (if its got a better service record than this one). If anyone knows of any decent ones in the LA area that aren't sky high in price let me know. I have no problem fixing one up as long as I don't have to sell my soul to buy the parts

I don't think I'd even think to look at a 600 whenever I hear the word misfire. You don't know if the cylinder walls have been getting washed and scoring of the cylinders has begun, prepare for full rebuild. Not worth it buddy, it'll make you hate the brand, find yourself either a MINT 600 that's running properly, or a damn nice 500 with the goodies. Either will have enough go power, though the 500 may be easier to flip as you say in the long run. V12s don't sell well unless, low milage, perfect running, and history documents etc.

You never know, you may get attached and keep the car. They're intoxicating, they want to go faster and faster.:D

I can understand the attraction for the price. I've seen too many stories by people who bought a 750iL for 1k. Yeah, like that is going to be a good car. The smart ones bought them and drove it in to the ground just to do it with no emotional attachment.
