Just picked up this 2004 unimog u500 with 9000 miles on it. It came with a stainless steel sand box and a snow blade. I’m selling the sand box and possibly the blade too. I’m in Washington state U.S.A.

I’m doing a few mods.

I bought a front end loader off of a like new flu419SEE. I’m making a plate to mount it on the front DIN mount. I found a place that sells the attachment claws. I bought a kit from D and B construction equipment that converts the front of the loader into a skid steer style quick tach so I can run all my skid steer attatchments too.

I am wanting to add the working/crawler gearbox. The truck has the transmission prep so it should be a bolt up. My question is has anyone else added the gearbox and what all is involved with it aside from the bolt up. It looks like pneumatic air hookup and wiring the switches into the gearbox. I heard it needs to be programmed with star diagnostics? can I buy the software to do this? What is my best bet
I also read somewhere there was a recall number 06v457000 on nov 30 2006 sounds like the recall required a gear shift electronic control unit to be replaced and 2 relays that made it so you old brake it easier in low range, otherwise the engine torque would be too strong. So I’m thinking this may have to be done too?

Are these crawler gears worth the cost of adding? Just curious if people actually even use them?
where could I find a gearbox.

I also want to change the speed limiter from 55 to 70. What software is needed for this?

Im adding a front winch, and I’m also adding a rear winch. I was looking for the rear winch kit warn made back in the day for this truck Are any of them still around for sale? Warn part number 67800?

also looking for ideas to make a hitch plate on the back so I can tow easier with a receiver hitch. I also have a pneumatic universal kit to add air brake hookups to the rear.

I swapped out the steering wheel to one I liked better.
adding a nice stereo system.

I just did a cut and buff on the paint job and it looks better than new now.

adding a electronic brake controller too.

any word where I can get a workshop manual?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or input to help the project

Is there a reliable place in Germany to order parts?

Nice truck!
To reprogram the speed and get workshop manual you should get STAR Diagnosis Tool, either from Mercedes or Chinese knock off.
To get the parts you can even contact your local MB dealer as long as you have parts numbers.
Alternatively, you can contact Neil from Merex in Germany or girls at Atkinson Vos in UK.
To get the parts numbers you'll need EPC (electronic parts catalog) which also comes with STAR DT.

Something like that would suffice. It comes with EPC , WIS/ASRA - parts catalog and workshop manual.
Looks like a best possibility Ive seen.. didn’t say u500 but assuming it will work with that. Im adding crawler gearbox so not sure if that could reconfigure to do that? Have you by chance used this interface? Rob at TERRY LEE told me a lot of the knock off ones wont even communicate with the unimog, so makes me a bit nervous when ordering from china.. thanks for the link... you know anything more about that one? Thanks

Thanks. I’ve heard a lot of these aftermarket units won’t communicate with unimog. Do you have this one? Will it communicate ?

Before bolting stuff on/off, you should get a hold of and read this puppy, tells you most everything you need to know to safely bolt things to and from a Unimog U500

Sorry, it might be "Part B" you need:

Quick edit, daym does that thing look good on a Blue U500! Now all I want is a U500 with a FEL...

Also calls for this "Trussing" (Code CA3), for protecting the frame when using a FEL:

Then of course, you'll need one of these to complete the package:

Also, does this winch make my face look fat?

Working gears are essential since the overdrive ratio of the main gearbox means 1st is a mere 9.57. Crawler gears are only needed for a few implements (trench machine, snow grinder/blower etc); NOT for increased tractive power. In my application only good for matching tire to winch speed.

If you want tractive force...then you want Code G31 (sadly only availble on the 4cyl, U400, not sold here AFAIK)...

Though the U500 can be configure up to tow just about anything you'd need to tow:

So, if I read all that right (and math is NOT my strong suit), the maximum force the implement plate is good for is 5t of pulling. But then in the same book there's that MONSTER winch, that puppy can't be only a 5t winch....It's the size of a smart car! I guess it's hydraulic so you can set it to whatever force you want I suppose.

Good info. It’s not real clear what exactly is being added for the frame trussing? Got any more info?
