Hello all,
I purchased a MBZ w140 1996 S320LWB,( will post pictures soon)
It sure is different then my 03 E320 and my 02 ML320!
Please, need some quick answers, I did not get a manual with the car and could not find these answers in the "sticky" manual on the forum.
1) Rear vanity mirrors only light up at night when opened ,yes or no?
2) No drive away automatic door locks, yes or no?
3) On my other MBZ, when you lock the cars the lights blink 3 times, how do you know when the W140 is locked? should there be lights or horn or nothing.
Thanks in advance for your answers and help.
Glad to be with you all!

On number 3:
It's either on the door handle, but since your's is a '96 like mine (depending on the month produced, i don't really know when they changed it) The lights might be in your rear-view mirror... I know somebody with a '95 that had the lights on the door handle, mine's in the rear-view, so somewhere in between they changed that. You'll see the little red and green light, and this also means that you have to point the key at the rear-view when locking or unlocking. It needs direct line-of-sight.

On my 1996 S320 LWB it is located on the rear view mirror-The remote is IR and not RF like most other cars. From what I heard, If the red light comes on the rear view mirror, it indicates the battery on the remote is low, but the remote will continue to work.

Now do not quote me on the red light, but I read it here. Oh,,, the IR sensor is the brown little stub below(it's on my S320) the rear view mirror.

Hope this helps.

Mines a 97 S500.

1) Rear vanity mirrors light up at anytime of day provided the ignition is switched on.
2) All doors automatically lock within five seconds of driving off
3) My indicator lights flash three times when I remote lock and flash once when I remote open. On top of this you can see the lock button recess or pop-up.

On my '99 S320 LWB, the vanities will light up any time they are opened. The doors automatically lock when I hit 9mph and automatically unlock when I open one of the doors. And when I lock the door, it will blink the turn signal bulbs three times and it will blink the little security light on the door lock switch inside too. When I unlock the car, it will blink the lights once.

The vanity mirrors are all the same; open lid, trip switch, lights come on. With your '96, the remote locking is infrared. You will have the red and green lights on the door handle as well as the red and green indicators along the bottom of the interior rear view mirror with the blocky sensor protruding below the mirror. Aim key fob at sensor. Unlike later versions of the W140, the exterior lights do not flash to indicate lock-unlock, only these indicators. To check the key fob battery, point the fob at your eyes, press the button and watch the red light inside wink at you -- or not.

The system that locks the doors when the car reached a predetermined speed was a later development, as indicated by the member with the 1997 140. Have a look at the manuals up in the sticky. You can download the one for your vehicle to your laptop and carry it everywhere.

Thank you,
You all are correct.
The rear vanity will only light up with the car running.
The locking indicator is on the rear view mirror ( red / green) lights.
The 1996 model does not have automatic drive locks.
You guys are great, Iam sure I will have more questions.
PS. I did not get rid of the E320 or the ML320

Hello All,
Quick question, the glove box light and the two air vent wheels close the the glove box do not light at night, can you tell me if they are connected to the same fuse or are all three bulds out?
Thanks in advance for your replies

I don't know about the fuses, but if it is not a fuse then the glove box light bulb is easy to reach. As for the air vent control wheels there is one light bulb for each set of two. In order to replace that bulb you have to remove the glove box lock, then the unit it is in with the two door open/close buttons (glove box and the dash mounted cell phone/eye glass storage compartment cover). Then the cell phone control head has to come out in order to remove the box/compartment that holds it. Once that is done the center control unit has to be removed, then you will have access to the two bulbs that light up the four control knobs on that unit. You need a special tool to remove the lock but others have used alternate items. Removing the cell phone control head is also a little tricky but not difficult once you know where to insert some sort of makeshift tool to release the head from its frame. It is not as difficult as sounds but you have to be very careful when removing the lock. Search on this site for the procedures I have mentioned and you will find all of the information you'll need to get to the control knob light. I would add a link or two but I don't have the time to do that right now. Sorry.
Hope this helps.
BTW, if you end up going to the trouble of replacing the one burned out light bulb for the two knobs on the right side, I would recommend you also replace the other one.
