Greetings All,

We picked up our 'new' R129 on Friday - a 2001 SL500, brilliant silver with black interior, with only 27K miles. "Clean" does not begin to describe this car; the former owner was obviously a 'sunny days only' driver and we're grateful for that because the interior, exterior, and engine bay all look brand new.

This forum has already been very helpful and I'm sure that it will continue to be ...

Thanks,

Stuart

What a stunning looking car Stuart, you must be very pleased.

I shouldn't think you will be posting in asking about problems for quite a while :D

Congratulations. Welcome to the Forum. I believe this to be the best R129 Forum for information on your car.
Your new car looks great and I like your idea of buying with less than 30K miles. I bought mine with 20K last 7/06.

Did you know that there were only 4,217 unit sales of the 2001 R129 in the U.S. I hope the following is of interest to you as well.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for the excellent reference information - I've already saved a copy to my computer and printed a copy for my "SL" file ...

Yes, having only 27K miles was a big plus - having only 20K would've been even better, right? This car had only one owner from new and was not a lease car - something of a rarity based on looking at dozens of CarFax reports. It was sold new and serviced 100% by the same dealer where I purchased it complete with the MB Certified Pre-Owned warranty (12 months $0 deductible). That's some peace of mind for both myself and the lovely woman that shares my checkbook :)

If I remember from other posts you've removed the headlamp wipers from your car to clean up the front end a bit. I'm guessing that the mechanical removal portion of the project was easy, but did you deactivate the control circuits in any way? Did you put small plugs in the fascia openings where the shaft came through?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

Stuart,
I made no changes to my headlamp assembly. My car came with an
SL2 Option Package ($1,820) which consisted of the following:

Xenon headlights w/ automatic level control w/o headlight washer/wiper
Integrated trunk-mounted 6-disc CD changer
Electrically heated seats

Unfortunately, My car does not have Xenons but does have the factory AMG bodykit with 18" wheels + pano roof and rear seats. All big money options in the UK. I dont have the headlamp washers and they were never fitted. IMHO removing them is the best thing you can do to improve the look

When I think of R129 SL's, I see your car SW23185.

Congrats on your acquisition.

This really is a good forum, I've moderated on a few boards in the past and I'm really impressed with this one.
