New To Diesels, how do I test the injectors?

Friends: I'm new to diesels, but have a good working knowledge of gas engines. I was just given a 1982 300SD with 185K on the clock. The engine runs, but really has a hard time idling a lower RPMs and is blowing a contstant blue smoke from the tail-pipe. The past owner told me he recently replaced the fuel filters and glow plugs, but that's all I have to go on. This Benz acts like its running on 3 cylinders! I leaning toward the injectors not performing correctly?

Injectors

Hi,
A few questions please. How is it to start? If it lights easilly, this is an indication of good compression, and points at the injectors. If it is a bear, a poor injector could also be at fault. How is the oil consumption? It is possible to run a concetrated injector cleaner through the system as the car is running. While it may not do a complete job if it, if there is improvement, you're heading in the right direction. I think PerformanceProducts sells something like this. Not affiliated just suggesting a single known source, there are probably others among the board's sponsors.
It is also possible to test the injectors, this requires a very high pressure source of fuel to give them a squirt and the observe the spray pattern and check for leakage when it is not supposed to be squirting.
regards,
Douglas
