last year i baught a the new 2003 SL 500. 1st one at the dealership. Anyways 3 weeks later the SRS lite came on. We took it back to the dealership and they cleared the coad with the diagnostic center. SRS lite next day came on again. Dealership replaced the steeringwheel/passenger airbag. SRS went off again, the seat belts sometimes wouldent move, and the parktronic would go crazy even when there wasnt anything around the censors.
i have never had any problems with my 93 sl500, even with 19' OZ.
has anyone else had these problems with there new sl500. Or is ours just a lemon?
please reply with your remarks.
thanks

my sl 500 2003 had been the shop over 120 day the first 10 months. until afoul smell came from the car which turned out to be the door trim leaking i was told metal glue fumes. we have not been able drive the car since. they replaced most of the interior but it still smells and makes sick. any one else with this smell should get checked right away

I had the exact scenario with my 03 sl. Took 6 trips and a total of approxiamately 10 days without my car for them to get it fixed. Dealership replaced air bags and wiring harness for srs. Finally fixed after mb rep came and spent day with them. Problems now include clove compartment not opening and seat belts locking up. Taking it in tomorrow.[:(]

Hi all,

I have a mercedes sl 500 2003, the SRS light just came on, what should I do to get it fixed? I see many of you had this problem and took it to the dealship back and forth.. you said they replaced the passenger airbag and it didn't fix it.. what was the issue at the end? how did they fix it?

Please let me know asap.

Thank you so much!

There is a fault in the system and you must read the diagnostic codes for the SRS. This requires a scanner such as a $150 Carsoft or $800 Mercedes SDS. Once the problem is corrected the code must then be erased to turn-off the SRS light.

Your problem may be a faulty electrical connector under the passenger seat. If so, this can be a $1.29 repair that you do yourself in 20 minutes, but you need the scanner. A dealer charged someone around $400 for this same repair. So, I advise getting the scanner and repairing yourself or taking the car to a competent independent shop that has SDS.

Thank you so much for your help Bobterry! you saved me from going to the dealership and spending at least a min. of $500 !.. I heard of this place where they specialize in Mercedes and BMW car repairs, I will bring my car to "import auto specialist" located at "777 Warden Ave. Scarborough, ON" where they have the scanner for mercedes, they don't charge a penny to find out what the problem is.. and their rates are very reasonable.

Thanks again :)

New SL500 problem

It's not a lemon! It's typical! Mercedes quality is not what it used to be. One would think that at their selling price the owner should not have so many expensive problems, but they do. After several problems with my '04SL I sold it and will never buy another. As far as the investment goes I lost about $60k
