I threw this up in the new user thread, but I figured this section is going to be of more help to me:

I recently became the owner of a 1972 280SE. The car is in pretty good shape, only one small rust bubble. The car runs, but runs pretty rough. It'll idle pretty good but when you get on the gas it'll act like it wants to stall. I dont know what the previous owner did but I think it could have been sitting for a while. I'm coming from the VW world, I know NOTHING about this car...

Anyways, to the pictures!

Take a look at the "Online Resources" portion of the forum. I uploaded a bunch of stuff on tuning, troubleshooting ,fuel system and more , for the 108s.

I would first start out making sure the tuneup stuff is done - plugs, wires, filters, etc. After that, I'd look at fuel, air and spark. Air is rarely messed up, so look to the fuel management system, and whether you have a strong spark.

Great looking car. A very nice find.

The body looks too good to be a Chicago vehicle.

Is it an "import"? Perhaps from Arizona or California . . . ??

Welcome to the forum.

In addition to the basic tune-up stuff Grubeguy mentioned, give the carb a good cleaning. Our '73 220 runs fine as long as we regularly clean the carb. Gunk can build up pretty quickly in the barrels / linkage. We also run some good gas treatment through the tank regularly. If we neglect the carb for some time, it starts to run pretty rough.

Dear Sparky, no carb on a 4.5. It would be a good idea to replace the rubber intake manifold hoses and 'donuts' between the manifold halves.

Can you please tell me where are the "online resources"?

EDIT: never mind I saw its a sticky in this section... I was looking in the forum.

Just an update guys, I found that both of the exhaust manifolds are rusted/burnt through. This is the first thing on my list, does anyone know where I can find a set and maybe a DIY? No dice here or over at peachparts...
