I just bought and installed the JVC KD-NX5000 on my 1999 SLK230. All I have to say is WOW....

Not only does it do nav, you can add an ipod controler (already did), bluetooth for your phone (not the MBZ out dated Motorola phone) this piece is on order. But it also plays dvd and has a 40G Hard drive.

Looks clean I will post pictures soon. Installation was a easy (I did take it to Circuit City but I think I could have done it myself). Just have to get the right harmess for the BOSS system. I will also put the part numbers if anyone needs them for the harmess.

Cordero, it looks very cool. Do you find the screen too small for satellite nav or does it "talk" directions to you?

specs

i am loving the unit more and more everyday. the nav is great the screen is not too small the voice commands are clear you can choose the left or right channel or both if you like. I was loookiing for a solution that would give me a clean look, ipod integration, bluetooth ability, and nav all in one unit. not only did i get that but i got traffic on the nav and it routes you around trafic. the poi is updated via the cellphone connection and a dvd with dts. i love it.

HU - KD-NX5000 = 1000.00
Harness used to connect radio to Bose system - Metra 80-1784 (it is for VW 1987and up) - 19.99

Watching Sin City while stuck in traffic - Priceless

That is all you need.

JVC KD-NX5000 Pics

I picked up a JVC KD-NX5000 unit a few months ago and had it installed in my 2002 SLK 320. The unit is single DIN and will slide right into the stock opening. The harness came with my unit (in the box). I bought the iPod adapter and as you can see in the attached images, my iPod sits (and charges) in the net where the passengers compartment is. It plays DivX encoded media, DVD's, and CD's. The GPS feature is great (voice prompt). You can rip CD's directly to the built-in HD. Lots to mention about this unit... Oh, the face plate is detachable too!

I've noticed that the unit runs warm, especially when playing DVD's/DivX/Discs. You can hear the fan power up. Not a big deal. Very happy with the unit and would recommend it.

THe NAv

Here is one time where size does not matter. Most of the time you are listening to the NAV instead of looking at the map. With 13 mil POI and the abiility to update them via a bluetooth connection what more do you need. 2D and 3D map on the Nav, entry of addres is city, street name, number you can also do intersections if you like. Most of my comute is from home to work so why use the NAV for that, well it also gives you traffic and will reroute automaticaly if you like. The fisrt 3 months are free then you hace to pay for that service, Don't know how much i will tell you in 3 months. It will also automaticaly change the display for night driving. With a video input for a rear camera and a video and digital output what more can you ask of this unit. i only wish you could rid dvd's into the hardrive with my ipod connected and placed in the armrest i dont need the space on the hdd for music.

Connection is easy to do yourself as long as you buy the correct harness, i posted the one i used. with the harness you can make the connections outside the car and then just plug then in and you are done.

Yes on the remote

The unit comes with a remote and it is easy to use. When you input it starts to eliminate letter for you so a street like

Gardena only took 3 keys G*R*A i guess there is only one street with those first letter in the Los Angeles.

NO touch Screen

It is not touch screen, you get use to the remote very quickly and it is not difficult to use. And with letters disapering as you type well that makes it so much better.

Cordero (or anyone else),

Do you know if there were any issues with the speed sensor hook up?

When I hooked up my KD-NX5000 to the speed sensor, I got no speed reading on the unit, my doors no longer auto locked at 8mph(or whatever speed it is), and my top would not go up till I turned the key off then back on. When I disconnected the speed sensor from the stereo the car functions worked fine, but of course still no GPS.

I may be wrong

If I am not mistaken the VSS is only used to turn the sound up the fater you go and to also give you a better reading on the how long it will take you to get to your destination. The GPS should still work, it sounds like there is a short somewhere, but I am new to these cars so please take my advice with caution, I would try to redo the connections you and see if there is something small you may have missed.
