Hi I'm the looking at a 2004 S500 4matic with 19,400 miles on it from a non MB dealer. car is really clean i drove it and its nice, but after reading forums on MB I'm not sure, it seems these cars have lots of problems. or is it the older models or all of them. this would be my ST Benz. car still has 2ys left on factory warranty. just need and honest opinion from the pros. would car be due for any type of service now.

If it's under $50k grab it! It's not the S-class that has had problems, it is some of the people on this forum that have had the problems.

That sounds way too high, but I am no expert on "retail Blue Book." Since the new W221 S550 came out all W220s are in the dumper. I really would not consider spending more than $50K.

All cars have problems. Any highly advanced and over complicated kinda car, MB, BMW.... etc.... will have more problems than a honda with roll down windows and manual seats, and a cheap radio etc. And by 2004, alot of the early kinks had been worked out. You'll get the CPO, plus factory warranty anyway. If you want it, buy it.

Check Edmunds.com or Kelly (kbb.com) for prices. 4-Matics are sweet. See:

My post in the string at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/gen...idering-s-class-used-2.html?highlight=4-Matic
and http://forums.mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=149767&highlight=4-Matic

You can check when service is due by selecting mileage in the instrument cluster LCD display (use the lower set of buttons on the left side of the steering wheel); then hit the "down" arrow on the upper left side of the steering wheel to cycle through until you get to the next service readout). You will get a wrench symbol and the readout in miles remaining until the next service (A or B) is due.

If you take the VIN to a dealer, he should be able to pull up the car's service history.

Per Kelley, in my particular area (Arlington VA) an S430 4-Matic in "Excellent" condition would bring $60,900. One in "good" condition would bring about $4K less. Edmunds shows a Starmarked (certified) S-430 4-Matic with just over 21K miles for nearly $63K.

If you consider a purchase on e-bay, be sure to get a Carfax report; the car could be made up from two wrecked ones or could have been submerged - or it could be legitimate. It can be tough to tell.
