I used to own a '88 W124 300TE, and was somewhat active on the W124 forum here. I recently picked up a fairly nice '79 300TD that I am recomissioning. It's been off the road for six years, but has a nice straight body and only 120K miles. Starts and runs nicely, but will need some various rubber bits replaced and general fettling. Nice thing is, everything seems to work from HVAC to vacuum locks to windows. Biggest issues at the moment are sticky brake calipers and rotten hardlines to the rear suspension. A couple patches of surface rust here and there, but overall amazingly clean for a car that has spent 31 years in New England. This is my first Mercedes diesel, but I had a number of Peugeot 504/505 diesels and turbo diesels back in the day before they became too hard to find parts for.
This car will not be a daily driver for me, just a toy in my little toybox of a garage. Replacing the much-loved Peugeot 504D that I sold five years ago. She joins a '74 Triumph Spitfire, '86 Alfa Romeo Spider, '86 Alfa Romeo GTV6, and my "winter beater/daily driver', an '08 Saab 9-3 wagon. I do as much of my own work as I can, I'd rather buy tools than pay for labor. Hoping to have the old girl in decent shape by spring, with a goal of driving her down to PA for the Carlisle Import Show next year.
Thanks in advance for all the help I know I will be getting!
