My wife recently purchased a 1968 Mercedes 280 SL. Previous owner (now deceased) bought the car in 1978 from the original owner who was one of his clients in Frankfort, Germany and had the car shipped to the U.S. as a present for his wife. Wife drove the car until this spring and was purchased by my wife at the Motorcar Portfolio Auction in Akron, Ohio. the lady owner from Cleveland introduced herself to my wife and I at the auction and gave us a very large folder full of every singe receipt for the car during those years. The car had been well-maintained and is in good running condition.

Car had been repainted once and was shown at the Cleveland Autorama about 20 years ago and won first place in its class. Engine was rebuilt a few years back and car runs very well. It needs new trunk matting and carpets were recently replaced, but need cleaned and tightened up a bit. So far we had a new exhaust put into the car and a leaking power steeering pump was replaced with a rebuilt. No major issues, except speedometer (in Kilomerters) no longer works. Mileage is around 130,000 kilometers.

Car has a 4-speed automatic, but we are not sure it is shifting into 4th gear. Otherwise the transmission shifts nicely and has no issues. I will post this information in another post in hopes that someone can offer some ideas.

This is the German version with non-sealed beam headlights. Car is nice and solid with some minor rust along bottom of rear fenders. We have a restoration shop at work and will take care of this later in the year, as my wife wants to drive the car while it is good weather. See Home Page for some pictures of some of our cars. Pictures of the 280 SL are shown below, and more picturs will be added to our car museum web site in the near future.

One of the pictures shows the car in our car museum where it will be stored this winter.
