Hi guys.

Finally had a chance to work on my mog. And it started bad. My M180 did not look good.
I am no engine guy. I just have basic knowledge and basic tools available.

So I sent the M180 to the "doctor" for a diagnosis. He called time of death..
In short; Compression is in the 3-4 area. The insides of the engine is rust damaged. And the pistons have been grinding metal.
They can fix it and make it as new again. But it will cost. They did not want to give a fixed price.

But they can get me a good deal for an M130.920, and recommended that rather than repairs. As they are confident it will be more cost effective.
And from what i have read on forums. It should fit with some modifications that does not seem that major.

My Question.
The engine is from a MB 280 Sedan, and is equipped with dual carbs. My intention is use of the 404 on my farm.
It is rugged terrain, but i will probably never push the mogs angle limits.
Will the standard carbs do OK for offroad. Or should i definitely get 2 mog carbs to put on? (I am not chasing performance boost for the M130)

So how much are they charging for the used 2.8? Any warranty?

When you say you are not chasing performance boost for the 2.8.......? I would bet that the used motor, and the conversion costs are going to outweigh the costs of a stock M180 long block, and certainly a used m180.

The reason most people do the conversion is for a power increase. If you are doing it as simply an alternative motor option and don't need that power.....make sure to really crunch the numbers.

Car M130 Conversion:
Oil Pan Mods, Oil Pump mods, Flywheel mods, Exhaust Mods, just to name the primary ones.

In regards to the mog carbs versus the car carbs. If you are not reallly using the truck heavy off road, the car carbs will work. Any type of heavy offroading and you will want to stick with the mog 32NDIX carbs. I have seen NUMEROUS 2.8 engines running a single 32 NDIX, without issues. Obviously a power decrease, but may or may not matter to you.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Scott.

In work at my farm it is definitely offroading. But it is not pushing the angles the mog can do.
I do love the look of the zenith. So it is tempting to change, but another carb does not go cheap.
An i might just wait for the day i find out i need it.

The mog is definitely not overpowered in the M180. But i have tried stock 404 and could live with it.
But now that i have to drop the original engine anyway. It is naturally tempting to put in the M130.
What i meant is that i am not looking to boost the M130. No Fuel Injection conversion etc.

And it was especially tempting when i can get the engine installed for about 5000 usd.
They provide 12 months warranty if they do it.
Any M180 engine i have found will cost me about 4000 usd delivered to Norway.
So this seems like quite a good deal to me.

I would use the proper mog carbs for sure. The stock M180 carbs really help when you accidentally do something stupid. I would also price out a fresh block from Scott. I have to think he has some sitting on your side of the pond waiting to be shipped state side. M130 is a great option, but might not be worth the trouble for a farm truck.
