Okay, maybe I'm an idiot, but I can't seem to seat my new hood ornament (emblem). Any thoughts?

You may very well be an idiot but at least you're a 124 owner. And ornaments don't come with installation instructions...
You insert the ornament in the grill shell opening. FRom below you then rotate the outer part of the base 90 degrees CW (as viewed from below) to lock the ornament in the grill shell.

180 degrees appears to be an option, but 90 does not. What am I missing?

It's been a while since I did one so I can't remember if it's 90 or 180 deg, but I DO remember that it's a lot easier to put the new emblem in than it is to get the old one out!
