My family just bought a 2006 CLS 500 and I have to say it looks even better in person than in the magazines. But there are a few minor problems and one MAJOR problem.

The MAJOR problem is that the car takes 4-5 seconds to start, and sometime it FAILS to start!! Has anyone else had this problem? If yes, what was the problem and did MB resolve the problem?

Here is my short list of ISSUES, and QUESTIONS:

ISSUES
1. difficulty starting, AAAAARGH!!
2. ANNOYING "Please take your Key" chimes (KeylessGO related?)
3. steering wheel control SCANS radio stations instead of selecting PRESETS!
4. STRANGE low-level rumbling and hissing noises from car with engine OFF and listening to radio (volume set on low).
5. Analog clock spins through 12 complete hours when adjusting clock 1 hour for daylight savings time. WTF!!!


QUESTIONS
1. Does anyone know if there are lumbar support adjustment on "standard seats"?
2. Has anyone had their 1000-3000 mile service? If yes, what is included?
3. What does setting "Lighting" to "Manual" do????


Other than that. I really love the car!!! ;-)

To help shed some light for you on the vehicle, problems 1 and 2, good points and info to share.
Problem 3, that setting can be changed through the spdo display's programming.
Problem 4, yes it happens, but if I could help you understand why, maybe you'll look at it as a "cool" option instead of a problem. But after a certain amount of time, the car goes into "rest mode." It is programmed to release some pressure from the airide, some engineering reason why and to lengthen part life I'm sure.
The rumbling, If its the same noise I'm thinking, when you approach your vehicle, the car prepares itself for you to drive, fuel pump, SBC, or ABC, it's one of these things I was told by a tech but cant quite remember exactly what it was, but pretty sure it was to do with the brakes. If you leave the hood open for a bit, then open the front door or hit the unlock from your remote, you'll see the brake unit vibrate and click on.
Clock issue, that does kinda suck.
On your Q3, that is for the daytime running lights. Basically, do you want them on all the time, or only operating to the exact setting on your headlight dial (on, off, auto, parking, fog, ets.)

Anyhow, this is a good thread to kickoff though.

Dunno if this is related but my E class had a similar problem before when I first bought it. It had difficulty starting and sometimes it just fails to start and the problem was because the crankshaft sensor malfunctioned.

my 03 e500 clock sets similarly to the way you describe above. sometimes it goes clockwise ,,, sometimes it goes counter-clockwise ,,, sometimes both! really! it's a little schitzo, but i sort of get amusement out of watching it! (wow! just read that statement ,,, boy, does that make me sound pathetically lonely!!). anyway, i don't let it bother me as it keeps good time and is not an issue (for me).

the early service (1,000-3,000 mile to which you reference above) is a 'general' review of the functions of the car, maybe tyre inflation check at best. oil doesn't get changed until 6,000-6,500 miles.

Wow! Your Mercedes takes 5 seconds to start?! I would get straight back to your dealer...

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all the great advice! Especially how to (temporarily) turn off that annoying chime!

FYI, Here is the specs on our CLS500:
COLOR: Pewter, Black leather, Laurel wood trim
OPTION: Parktronic, Keyless-Go, Xenon lights, HK stereo
Production date: 1/2005

Everyone loves the look of the car! And it really is a sweet ride, no problems with the transmission nor the brakes, as others have mention in the forums.

We will be bringing the car for service tomorrow to have MB look at the starter problem. Hopefully, the engine is not damaged by the the long starting cycle. :-(

MB fixed the starting problem on our CLS500! Turns out the problem was the "fuel sensor" in the fuel tank. They had to drain and refill the fuel tank to fix the problem. Our local MB service guy did not mention any recall or technical bulletin on our CLS500 (build date 1/2005), e.g. no brake, batter, alternator issue as mention in another posting in this forum.
