Hello, working on my W116 1978 450Sel, put a new fuel pump and filter on and found the connection on the fuel pump to the filter is check valve. The old connection setup was just a banjo connection with a bolt. The new pump
has a check valve with a threaded stem for the banjo hose to slide on. What is supposed to hold the banjo hose on the new check valve setup? An end cap nut. If you put an end cap on what is the purpose of the check valve since you block the end of the stem? Confused? Why the change of set up?

They sell end cap nuts to seal the connection. So that's what I did. I've still not been able to get the car started. This car was sitting for about 30 years. Both the old pump and old filter had old gas in them that turned to a black sticky consistency like black caulking which leaked partially out after the components sat on the ground a day or so. .I bypassed the tank because it is full of old gelled gasoline.

This is what was coming out of both the pump and the filter.
