Has anyone checked out that site to see their CAI system with the cone filter in behind the grill? Anyways...I was just throwing this out there to get thoughts and reactions...I'm not hatin' but, couldnt you have a aluminum pipe fabricated at shop for much less with a k+n cone at the end for much less than $450? or something thing equivalant? I have have done much research on this site and have seen Steve Johnsons setups (kind of like it ...sorta but not really) I'm interested to see what you guys would say about this...It seems like it would be a good spot for the filter but then again would nt that spot be sucking hot air in unless you were going very fast?what about having some type of enclosed pressure? Or what about that set up with a modified air box around the cone where they have it..and insulated from the box back with heat reflectant? Sorry guys..just having a brain storm and thought I'd share and see other inputs...seeing that site and set up made me ask myself alot of questions.:)

Maybe you could add a web site so we can see what you're talking about?

You mention putting the filter in front of the grill, but I doubt that's what you actually mean as it would look a bit silly........... :D

Personally I am not a huge fan of the design but at least it is not an exposed filter in the engine compartment and the results are proven. I just don't like the filters hanging out where they are plus there is no "ram air" effect.

You can build something very similar for a lot cheaper. Just do a search on ebay for 3" intercooler piping. You will find the shapes and lengths you need for pretty cheap. You need to add silicone couplers and a K&N filter.

In the end you should be able to achieve the same results for less than 1/2 the price.

I will post pictures of my intake in several days. It is the 6th iteration but is by far the best design. Personally I like the design better than anything else I have seen but that is a matter of opinion. The only downside with my setup is that it took a bit more work than than the design others are using.

I've got a Needswings intake on my car. I was one of the first adopters so I got it at a discounted price as it is raw aluminum without the powder coating.

His price is higher then say K&N or AEM but his market (SLK32s and SRT6s) is very very small, not to mention that he has dyno proven results to back it up. Probably no more than 5,000 cars total where made so he's got to make his money somehow. The product is a very well engineered piece and comes with detailed instructions, hardware, T-shirt and of course the intake itself. He really paid attention to the bends and overall shape of the engine bay which makes it look great as well as perform great. You can see how the main (mandrel bent) piping follows the shape of the engine bay in the link below.

Rob (the main guy there) is an automotive enthusiast and is continuing to develop speed parts for the SLK32 and SRT6. His next piece(s) are sheet metal intake manifolds, or surge tanks, as some call them. He has also began development on an entirely new exhaust system including headers.

you can make the same CAI at Home Depot for about $50, using 5 inch black abs pipe, all the adapters and clamps are available and easily bolts on to the car.

8hp-10hp for $50 where can you go wrong? except the snooty Mercedes guys will laugh at you for being so cheap.. :crybaby2:

Needswings intake $450.00. Seeing the faces of your friends when you pop open the hood of your ride sporting plumber's piping as an intake, well you get the point...

Snooty Mercedes guys
Anyone would laugh at that!

The Needswings was designed for Crossfire. The filter was able to get between the gap of the grille and the radiator. Do we (slk) have the same amount of room (gap) as the Crossfire to allow the filter?
Does anyone with slk have this setup to confirm this?

Jerry
