i do believe the fault code P1886 is when something is physically broken inside the gearbox, like first gear hub and slipping.
Your belief is correct, but if you think you can perform this repair yourself, you are deluded.

I had this exact same code P1886 and after 2 trips to a transmission repair workshop and three weeks in pieces, they returned my A160 with a new K1 clutch drum.

Cost exceeded AU$4000 but I’ve had over 4 years of extended play so far.

Ah, cool - after the photobucket disaster, I'm a bit nervous about free hosting services - I only use it for forums, and images are reduced size, but who knows what tricks they might decide to play ...
.
No the images are fine, it was the seat adjuster attachment that I couldn't get, then the next day it downloaded fine and I posted that I'd got it.

Thanks for the bumper one too.

I think you're not going to repair it for less than UK£1,000?

That's the cost of a complete 2003-2004 W168 A160 in good condition with one year's MoT (roadworthiness inspection).

I would buy one, or another brand of car.

If you like yours more, swap the gearbox.

Or, you can buy a gearbox for UK£150.

I had an F in the display on Friday, limp mode 2nd gear only, P1844.

I had it reset but it came back a few miles later.

Is it serious? I was hoping the car would last a year or so.

I'm thinking fluid level, but I've not used the car as I'm rewiring the headlamps units, they've both got crumbling wires. One down, one to go.

The biggest motor factor here in Cyprus sold me 2 litres of Febi 236.14 and said it's the right fluid for this gearbox and supercedes 236.10 and 236.12.

I'm researching how to make a dip stick and what levels on it are min and max fill.

I had to laugh, I looked in the engine bay and inside the car for lift up hatches (couldn't see any)... and in the boot... I found the spare tyre, 195/50 R15. Great, there's a jack too, and a warning triangle in its cute cubbycase...

But... No battery in sight!

Ok, I give up chaps, where is it, what have you done with it? :)

Can't say for sure, as it's definitely not my area of expertise, but judging by these two files, probably not - only 236.10 is listed for 722.7 transmission.

LOL it's under the driver's feet ... I think you ought to read the owner's manual, even if only once and very briefly :wink

Yebbut... Nobutt... Yebbut...

RTFM? (Read The Fine Manual)?

Nah, that's the last thing us engineers do! We try to work things out for ourselves.

We hate to ask directions too, so Google Maps is a blessing! :)

Besides if I didn't ask daft questions here we couldn't have a chuckle, could we? :)

Thanks again David.

236.14 fluid has lower viscosity than 236.10 ATF and has not been approved by MB for the 722.7 transmission. There's probably a reason for that.

Excellent, many thanks again chaps.

I will get the real 236.10 fluid instead of using the 236.14

If they don't have it, Lofty's Fuchs 4000 says it's Dexron-III H - IF I can't get either of these fluids, can I use Dexron-III H of another brand?

Have you checked with Mercedes? They're pretty competitive on fluids / oils etc (so I was told), at least in the UK.

Also the Shell oil DrX mentioned above (or is it in another thread?) is listed in that Mercedes WIS file, so definitely okay.

Again, way outside my comfort zone :grin ... but if you want to mess with interior trim, or lights, cameras, illuminated door sills, head units, etc - give me a shout :wink

All cars later than 2001 are required to have a 16 pin OBDII plug within 30cm of the drivers position. Some are quite well hidden at times, behind ash trays, under covers, etc, but unless the vehicle is a limited production (small number manufacture), it's there somewhere.
An ELM327 is a 16 pin OBDII.

As for scanners, I've got a Foxwell Automaster Pro, middle of the road pricing, but does a pretty good job of diagnosing most problems. Has service reset, OBDII live data, automatic VIN (works for most cars, sometimes won't - I had to manually enter for a 2007 Nissan March (Micra) the other day). Cost me about NZ$400 a couple of years ago.

Shell Spirax S5 is the same as the Mercedes Fluid. I think Shell actually manufactured the MB product. MB's price NZ$36.10 litre, need to buy 5 litres. Shell's price NZ$180 for 20 litres, dellivered.

Emanual Online for detailed workshop manual, $10. Doesn't have gearbox rebuild in it, though.

Hi and welcome to BenzWorld!

You really need to get the car scanned - ideally on STAR, but if not, then on a reasonably capable scanner (not some generic OBD ELM327 thingy).
If you're anywhere near Northampton in the UK, I'd be happy to do that for you :grin

As to the owner's and workshop manuals, here's a link to Mercedes Owner's Manual and Accessories Brochure, but I do not have a workshop manual in pdf form.
The only other alternative is Haynes Workshop Manual for W168 on eBay:

Awesome, I greatly appreciate this!

Yeah I ordered a mid-grade OBDII scanner and then a set of Bosch plugs and Bosch coil replacement...it has 214,000 kilometers on it and no idea when it was last tuned up, so figured might as well. Thank you so much for your help...I'll update sometime next week!
