I need to know what metal the rear output shaft & Rear Drive Shaft is on a 1956 404.

The problem happened when I bent one of my rear links on a big rock. It didn't seem to be that bad of a bend so I didn't do anything about it. Well as some of you reading know what happened next, the bend shortened one side putting undo stress on the rear output shaft causing it to snap. Well since I have a short wheelbase 404 it's unlikely I will be able to find a used rear driveline and especially for a decent price. So I need to weld the rear driveline back on and then it needs to be either heat treated or chryologically treat the shaft for strength.

Either way they need to know what metal the rear output shaft and the rear driveline are. Any Help would be appreciated!

If your talking about the "drive shaft", its untreated mild steel. Only the splined portions will be heat treated. As goofy as it sounds, a regular drive shaft shop should be able to weld and balance the shaft. And you can always use a full length 404 shaft and have it shortened.
