I have a 1984 380SL and my mechanic is stumped. When my car is cold the idle is fine, but after it warms up the idle gets higher on its own. It doesn't come down. The mechanic says running the car at high idle will damage the transmission. Does anyone know how to fix this?

There are several things to check. You have an electronic idle control valve. Open when cold to allow more air during warm up. If it does not close the idle will increase once warmed up. Then there is an electronic idle speed relay.

Were you ever able to resolve this issue? I have an 84' euro coupe with a similar problem. Idle is a little rough at cold start, but rpm's are appropriate. However, as it comes up to temp the idle climbs to 1000-1100 in neutral and about 800-900 in gear. All the obvious easy fixes have been done and no noticeable lasting change. I've checked and tested all the vacuum lines for leaks. Summer is coming and it just drives me nuts to pull up to stop lights with the windows down and all I hear is my engine droning on!
