We have a 85 500 SE that we just purchased on ebay..the car had been sitting for about 3 years..We got it home and I tried to put a little anti-freeze in it...crack right behind the starter...
Has anyone seen or heard about this...I dont think it was from freezing..we are in the south and I dont think it had water in it..
Can it be welded? or engine replacement needed..
Thanks for any help....

Any more detail on where the crack is?

If it's a cylinder wall it can be sleeved and if it's a non structural area it can certainly be welded.

What's the rest of the motor like? Might end up being cheaper doing a motor swap.

Post a pic.

Just to ask the obvious question...
Are you sure its a crack? Can you see it? The reason I ask is that you state its behind the starter. Is it possible that its only a block plug that is leaking?
Also there are some epoxies that some have used to repair some cracks. Sorry about all the "some" in that last sentence, but I want to be sure to convey that this is an iffy repair--that works, sometimes.
