Started last year with intermittent outages of volume/info ctr/paddle shift buttons. Then this spring the horn started going off randomly. Read in this forum about short in system and that steering wheel would have to be replaced. Local dealership did that and all seemed ok.
Now the horn has joined the group, when it goes out, all go out. Since July we have taken it in 7 times. They have replaced several related modules to no avail. They will call and say it is fixed and 3 of the 7 times we never made it out of the parking space.
Any mercedes techs have any ideas?

Update-still need help though!!

Just got it back after 3 weeks and now the theory is it is heat related and causing plastic components to expand or contract and cause the intermittent outages on the steering wheel. Local dealer just replaced numerous wiring connectors and a harness, but alas, got it back "fixed" and the next day it got to 85F (hotter inside car) and no response from any steering wheel related electric functions. Dealer has checked national database and no other reports of anything like this. Any ideas no matter how wild they are would be appreciated. Once it cools off here in TN soon, we will be stuck waiting until late spring for issue to rise it's ugly head again.

Hello,

I have the very similar symptoms with 2007. Have you resolved the matter? I've replaced the clockspring so far. Now I'm told to replace the stering wheel, steering column module and front SAM. Seems like shooting in the dark.

Would be great to hear how you are doing.

Had the same issue on mine, only when hot outside and even hotter in the cabin, I got a load of error messages, no cruise, turn signals or ability to put the car in gear (or in neutral). It was pretty scary the first time it happened.
For me the symptom was accompanied by a slight play in the column stalk with all the switches etc. on it. There is a hex bolt on the underside of the steering wheel. It was very slightly loose. Once the stalk controls were centered and the bolt tightened, I have (touch wood) not seen the issue again....

Hi timfountain,

Thank you for the hint, my steering column was giving a bit of play after the car was under direct sun, though no errors, now I've tightenet the bolt and it's rock solid!
