Looking to buy a coupe soon, have admired these cars from afar for a long time. Please provide accurate advice, as specific as possible in response to questions. Looking at a early 70s 250c but may also go for 80s 300CD or CDT, possibly a 60s era 220 SE or 70s era CE.<br> <br> 1) I am a professional photographer and have bought old Leica cameras on the premise that if they haven't been abused (which is easy to see) they are so well-made that they're a safe bet, and I've never been burned. Can an old Benz be bought following the same logic or is the situation more complicated. Is an early 70s 250c servicable as a daily driver without putting a lot into it or is it really just a collectors' car at this point? On the positive side, I'd drive it regularly but not very hard (8-15 miles a day, mostly highway).<br> <br> 2) I've heard owners of old Volvos talk about getting the compression checked. Is this an absolute necessity with a Benz or can one, once again, follow the logic that if it drives good, sounds nice, and obviously hasn't been abused, it's a pretty good bet?<br> <br> 2) One car I'm looking at, in really nice condition, could use a rebuild on the carbs (duals). Can anyone tell me what this will cost? Also, when the carbs start to go, is that an indication of other trouble down the road? <br> <br> Have been unable to get accurate info about gas vs diesel reliability (250c vs. 300 CD or CDT). Claims have been made that both motors go 400,000 plus miles if taken care of. Can anybody offer anything on this that is not simply personal predjudice? I would assume that the gas motors are cheaper to rebuild (if this is needed eventually) than the diesels. Is this true?<br> <br> Any informed info on general reliability issues with the 250C, 300CD, 300CDT and 60's era 220 SE or 70s era CE Coupes? I own both a '82 230CE and a '61 220SEb coupe so may be of some help.<br> <br> 1) I've bought all my Mercedes using the theory that if they've been looked and are in good condition they are so well made that they're a safe bet, and have also never been burned.<br> <br> 2) I used my 220SEb as a daily driver for a couple of months when my old 200 was stolen and I can't imagine these or any newer Mercs not being serviceable. Other than regular servicing none of my cars get much money spent on them. The key is to be patient, spend a little more on the initial purchase on a nice one with service history and the least previous owners. <br> <br> 3) If you can get hold of a compression tester use it, it’s a simple process that only requires a removal of a plug. Take your time viewing the car and take someone with you, leave a small deposit and when you pick it up view it again as if its the first time you’ve seen the car.<br> <br> 4) Not sure of the cost on a carb rebuild but Weber conversions were available. Conversions on 190SLs are popular because they work better. Webers do work better, but original is original. The car will be worth more if everything is present, even if in a box. I'd hang on to them because 20 years from now any owner will be delighted to have them, regardless of condition. <br> <br> 5) It seems to be accepted that the diesels are more robust but then every petrol I've owned has been excellent. My present 230CE has very slight cam wear at 140000 but my old '84 200 had covered 230000miles and had the quietest and cleanest engine I've ever known.<br> <br> 6) The main problems with early Mercs is rust! They tend to rust round the rear wheel arches, along the rear chassis & boot floor and the front inner wings. Also on the early Mercs check and lubicate the grease nipples every couple of months, theirs a lot of them.<br> <br> Money is the big issue. Here in the UK a nice 220seb coupe will fetch over £10000, however the main Dealer can obtain most parts in a few days, and some rarer parts can be sourced from Germany within a week. On the other hand a mint 230 or 280CE can be found for under £2000, and theirs specialist companies who sell genuine parts for almost half of that the main dealer charge. I would advise going down to a Main dealer and talking to both the Parts and Service department, enquire on the price and waiting time on various parts. I’ve allways found them more than willing to offer free advice.<br> <br> <br>
