I have a relatively loud rattle that happens intermittently at idle in gear.

If I shift to neutral it fades drastically, if I start driving it just goes away. From what I've read on this forum I'm thinking it's either the cat or the resonator. But I'm stumped as to how I can determine which it is.

Mechanic tells me it's the cat, and I have no reason to doubt him, but he doesn't specialize in mercs so I'm not sure if the resonator option is something he might not know.

~75,000k miles 2002, CLK 430, original cats and resonator...

Well screw you guys, that wasn't the answer I wanted.

Cats it is. $1200 is the quote. Bleh. Any cheaper options that are quality? I'll spend money for quality but I hate spending money just because it goes through the dealer chain.

Ha! Yes, definitely sarcasm. Sorry if it wasn't obvious.

It wasn't the answer I wanted, but it was the right answer, so of course I'm grateful to those who took the time to respond.

Oh sorry, sometimes I can't tell..lol
Like aficionad0 said, that's your best bet. If it really is your cats, maybe replacing them with high flow cats would be cheaper?
Magnaflow makes aftermarket cats for our cars. A buddy of mine with a E55 replaced his and
the car sounds nice & it cost about $600.

I dont know where your at (because you have not filled out your user cp) but if you are in CA you only have one option. If you are in almost any other stae you can get any cat made for your car. If you live in CA 1200 sounds about right. Also is that quote for all of your cats or just 1?

I coulda sworn I had set that... Chicago IL though.

It was for 2 cats installed, MB OEM cats is my understanding.

That sounds right. It's both cats on the same side. Hopefully the other side doesn't go out on you, too. ;)

Good luck.
