Anyone know what this thing is? It's on the driver's side of my trunk, under the liner, in my '85 300d. It looks like a little motor attached to a long metal pole, which itself clips to the top of the plastic liner. What could it be?

Because you'd hate to have a buckle under the roof.

Inside the "pole" the motor drives a teleflex-cable, which moves the roof. With the grey plastic screw you see, you can manually drive the roof with a wrench (17mm), if the motor has a malfunction.

FWIW, the wheel lugbolt wrench works here too.

I've found that it is pretty easy to break that plastic nut. Then you need to get out the adjustable wrench. 15 half-turns gets it.
