Hey guys, i'm new to all this. I have an '04 E320 and it currently has a weird humming noise coming out of the front area.
I dont want to take it to a repair shop without knowing what the problem is since they will charge like crazy.
I am guessing that it is the bearings although it can be something else.
Does anyone have the same problem or a clue to what it could be?
Thanks

"Weird humming noises" come in a lot of flavors. Electrical? Mechanical? Metal on metal? Metal on rubber? Intermittent? Continuous? Fan in air? Rises and falls with engine rpm? Only when moving? "Out of the front area" can be anything ahead of the windscreen. Fan area? Front corners? Transmission? Top of the engine? Bottom of the engine? WSW pump? You're right, it is the bearings or something else.

Unless you give the forum some particular information, nobody here has any more idea than you do. It could be wind noise through the hood ornament for all anybody can tell.

I'll agree with Dr. J, but also if you complete your profile re: vehicle and location will help and if the location is near another member they may be able to give you a hand or at least recommend a trustworthy shop.

Also, is it only when your moving, only in gear, or just rev it in park? How about worse cold or hot?

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I'm sorry, I was in a rush and should have gone more into detail, the following happens:
It is a humming noise that changes with the speed the car is going at. I have recently noticed that the humming gets more intense as I veer left. It is more noticeable at slow speeds and it makes the car vibrate a bit. The humming starts slow and then blends in with the road noise but it can still be felt in both the steering wheel and the pedals.
The humming is not constant, it sounds something like voom...voom...voom... and the frequency varies with the speed.

No offense intended to the two respondants who are trying to help you but you have a W211 and there is a BenzWorld forum devoted to your car. It makes intuitive sense that some other owners might have experienced the same symptom(s). Wht don't you try posting this there also?

I don't remember more than one person recently referring to a bearing issue on a W211 but your could ask/search from the W211 section as suggested above.

Have you lifted the front and tried how the front bearing feels?
