I was driving yesterday on an on ramp to freeway when all of a sudden my steering wheel started jerking, quickly I braked and pulled over to the side - once I gathered myself I continued home (abut 4 miles) and it didn't happen again, do you know why this would happen? I am thinking it's alignment issues - the car is new to me and the tires are crap. Could it be joints?

it could be the tires. have you driven it faster lately than you have been? sounds like wheel shimmy. a weight could have come off. check all lug nuts also.

By jerking do you mean the steering wheel going from left to right very fast? This is mostly suspension related, have everything thoroughly checked. But worn-out tires and unbalanced wheels also causes wiggling/jerking when you reach a certain speed.

I don't know if it was going from left to right it was shaky pretty much in every direction. I always go around 60 and this hasn't happened before. It is a 4-matic and the tires are really worn. I will be taking it in soon for new ones and I am sure they will check everything when the align the car. At least I hope so. The car only has 132K on it and a lot more driving to do :)
