My 1999 SLK 230K with 46000 miles has begun to run poorly. The BAS and ASR light and the SRS light come on intermittantly while cruising at 40MPH on a dry highway here in Hawaii.

Any thoughts on where I should begin checking.

Thank you

A quick update since I rarely drive this car (94 year old fathers' main ride). With a modest pressing of the accelerator the car gives a slight surge and the BAS/ASR light comes on and this repeats approximately every 10 seconds.

thanks

Had a problem like that...

My SLK 230 started dying on the highway...just essentially lost power and died. It would usually restart and I could get to where I was going. After 3 of these occurrences I had it in for service and dropped $980 on parts and labor to replace a relay switch...don't have the repair papers in front of me at the moment. Good news, it can be fixed. Bad news, its probably gonna cost a bunch...good luck!

Hi Moostache,

thank you for the response. I ordered the brake light switch and made the decision if this didn't fix the problem it was off to the mechanic. Fortunately, the brake light switch did the trick. Car is running smoothly and no more warning lights or intermittant surges. Cheap fix at $33 and less than 30 minutes

Brake light switch? Did anyone explain what that had to do with intermittent stalling? I'm having that issue now, and would love it if it were that easy.

I would have to dig out the service record, but I am pretty sure my problem was not the brake light switch.

I have been having other problems of late (P1519, P0410, P0302, P0304, P0300) so I found a broken vaccum line in the MAP sensor line and I am going to try to clean the MAF Sensor in lieu of immediately replacing the MAF assembly.

I hope that clears up a little...

i would strongly suspect the K40 relay. given the age of this car this unit will fail and pretty much everyone on this forum has had SOME sort of issue which can be traced back to this relay.

it is basically a power distribution block which supplies and switches power to the fuel pump, supercharger clutch, various car computers. if its faulty you may have intermittent power dropping to various computers and even the fuel pump causing issues.
