With auto repair you have to stay in your comfort zone. Learning to turn a wrench is best done on a 74 nova that you paid 150$ for than a classic Benz. Not saying that there still isn’t plenty to do with limited skills and equipment.

If you lack the feel for the tools aluminum heads and blocks are not the best place to cut your teeth, a simple tune up can turn into a helicoil nightmare.
The M103/OM603 or M117 in these cars are all fairly easy to work on. Having an aluminum head is no reason to shy away from wanting to work on these cars, I am not suggesting replacement of the timing chain guides or head gasket here, I am talking about general maintenance. I agree with the comfort zone and the only way to see where that benchmark is, is to start looking around the engine and seeing what he feels is doable. I think Matt answered that in his replies. I just don't want to see the guy take a bath on this car, He obviously has a massive passion for this Model, The experience should be enjoyable

Gents, thank you. Thank you very much. :)

Driving this car is better than sex. Well, better than sex with an ex I had. But yeah, it's awesome. The car is a head turner. The leather in mine is like new. It's ridiculous! I cannot believe how good the front and rear seats look and feel. Thank God the prior owner garaged it AND had sheep skins on the front seats for three decades!

The dash is nearly flawless. The mbtex on the doors is still deeply black. It even smells nice. The prior owner had a new headliner put in a few years back and it's perfect.

Being a euro when I give it gas, it f***ing GOES!

What's really making me happy is I can fill it with ethanol free gas just 3 minutes from my place. It's even more expensive than standard premium, but don't you think it's worth it? I know I do.

I am looking forward to getting the CD player installed so I can have some decent tunes and go for a long drive.

So I've just replaced my radiator. I've actually been more mechanically minded with this car. I haven't been game enough to touch my newer ones. Do you guys reckon judging by the picture at operating temp that it may not have a thermostat?
In addition to the above, if there were no thermostat, the radiator would be partially bypassed.. always.. There is a round valve at the bottom of the 'stat that closes off the bypass port when fully open [hot].

That indicated temp, if engine warmed up, looks a lot like mine did with the new radiator & a 71C T/stat installed.

So is that warm enough to drive? Where I live its a it cooler especially in winter which it is now. The previous owner came from a place where it often got up to 40 Celsius so he may have had it replaced for a cooler one. It's about 70 on the outside of the thermo housing..

Thanks and sorry to hijack this post. I'm new to my 500sec as well and just want to drive it and having the same sort of issues. I was worried about it not running up to temperature and over fuelling etc. I've got a miss and a rough idle and now I've got the radiator and alternator sorted I've got to move on to that drama now.

My gauge now pretty much sits on the mark after 40. I have to check maybe and see if there's thermostat. What temp does the cold start/enriching cut out? It's doing its normal idle. It smells quite rich and I have a bit of a miss which is slowly getting better but still there. The cars been in a shed for 5 years but should be running newer fuel through it now. I know I have to sort the miss out but was wondering whether they are linked or the enriching was a temp problem..

You should start a new thread concerning the problems at hand you will get a better response

the cold start should only happen when cranking, the enrichment should taper off as it warms.

Check and replace the tstat .

Threads with multiple people with multiple problems are hard to keep track of . Best of luck.

Check and replace the tstat .
I'm a bit confused cause when I looked up for my thermostat there looked to be normal ones for mine and then there was other ones with a rod off the side? Weird shape. . Not sure which one to order. I Want the car working without pulling apart and then ordering one which will have to come by mail. No one will have one where I live.
