If you're going to spend the money for new tires, make sure your wheels are round, first!

my '87 300 SDL runs warmer than it used to. The only thing I haven't changed is the radiator. What do they cost and who is Nissen?

Are there thermostats set at different temps? My car runs at about the same temp as the newer cars, but it used to run at 80. Now 100. My '89 420 SEL still runs at 80.

Google is your friend here .. Nissen is a quality brand, as is Behr.

In answer to your query, yes. However, I think you’d be best off starting with the one specific to your car first.

This thread has received lots of attention, currently having over 200 replies thus far. In future, perhaps your needs might be better met should you start a seperate thread.

As an aside, my wife & I cruised through Brunswick just last week on our way out to Bailey’s & Orr’s Islands. What a lovely part of the world you reside in!

There is a Behr in there now. Does that mean that it is a replacement?
Both my MBs have Behr radiators from new. If original, there will be a mercedes ‘star’ logo on the top tank just inside of the top hose connection.

If a Behr replacement, this area will show grinding marks there.

John:

In God forbid a case of car overheating in traffic or highway (blown cooling hose, radiator, etc..)
What is the appropriate thing to do:

1- turn heat on max, turn engine off , and keep key on on position. This should also trigger the aux fans.
2- Turn heat on max, and keep engine on? this will keep the fan clutch moving for a bit before turning car off.

Thanks

Well... It depends on the circumstances. Probably the best thing to do is pull over and shut it off. That way you're not generating any more heat. If you can't stop, put the heater on full blast and keep the engine load and speed down.

If you shut the engine off the water pump stops running, (don't know about the aux pump,) so running the heat with the engine off probably won't do much good. Cooling it off quickly isn't of much value (maybe even to be avoided!), but not getting it any hotter is.

I'm sure there will be opposing viewpoints...

It also depends on what type of cooling system failure you were experiencing, if you have lost all coolant, such as a burst hose, continuing to run the car or open the heater will not help you at all. Likewise, if you have snapped a belt And the fan or water pump is no longer running, continuing to run the car will not help you. Turning the car off as soon as possible is the best solution in these cases.

If it is just a temporary overheating situation, such as going over a large hill or being stuck in traffic, and all your cooling system components, belts and hoses are still working - then yes, in that situation, turning on the heater and driving at moderate speeds, can help alleviate the heat . If you were stuck in traffic, try to exit the freeway and drive on city streets to get some wind blowing through the radiator.
