Well I got me a new Mercedes and it is the best thing that has ever happened. Here is how it happened.

I work at a place called Pic A Part. Its in Indianapolis,IN. Its a self serve junk yard, pay $2 to get in, take your own parts off and get them real cheap. Well we also buy junk cars. Someone sold us a 1988 Mercedes 560SEL. The car was in storage, and was previously titled in Arizona. The car is immaculate. No rust on it! At all, and the body is new perfect. It has a key mark going along the right side of the car and that was it. Interior is near mint. No cracks in the wood (well the gearshift wood is a little, but whos isnt). No dash cracks. Everything works, even the climate control works perfect. The only thing wrong was the timing guide rail had broken and caused the chain to jump. Well it just so happens we had another 560 in the yard that had been in a front end wreck. So I bugged the owner of Pic A Part to let me have the car and he said this: If you can get it to run, you can have it. All I want is your old car to substitute for the scrap value. My old car was a 84 500SEL euro. So I spent 2 days and swapped the motor and transmission and sure enough, the car runs and its mine now. Keep in mind, they junked the car for a mere $250!

Its a light tan/brown color with tan leather in the inside. Like I said, perfect all away around, in and out. The motor had 278,000 on it and runs like new and doesn't blow any smoke. The transmission I put in it had been rebuilt before and works ok. The only problems are :

They lifted the car up with a forklift to put it in the back, and they crushed the 2 hydraulic lines under the car that go to the rear suspension. So I took off the hydraulic pump on the distributor and took a cover plate from a 420 and left it for now.

They accidently threw out the air cleaner, the hydraulic pump for the suspension and the resivoir for it. I cant find anymore 560's in my area at all. The rear on the car sag's a lot.

I went out and bought some wheels and tires. The wheels are chrome, 16'' Lorinser wheels, mounted on 16'' wide V rated tires. The rims look brand new and look totally bad ass.

Im looking for some euro headlights, if anyone has some, please let me know.

It really is a shame what I see in the junkyard some times. For some reason in Tallahassee people throw away 116s like they're reusable cell phones. But you really gave him your old car? I would think it would have been worth the $250 to keep it.

I'm confused. What did you swap? The other 560 motor into the 560 from Arizona, or the motor from your 500 into the 560 from Arizona? And didn't your euro already have euro lights?

If he works in a Pick a Part, he'll come across any part he may need, given enough time.
A little secret the wreckers / dismantlers / self service bone yards don't want you to know,....
scrap metal yards often pay more for a junked car!

Here is how the motor swap went.

My 500 motor was rigged to hell. I kid you not, I had a ball valve for the idle speed control and the warm up regulator. That motor wasnt going into this car. I got another 560 motor from another 560 we had in our yard.

I need a hydraulic fluid resivoir for the suspension. If anyone has one please give me a call. 734 771 9761 thanks

I believe that there is a reservoir for sale on Ebay right now. under Mercedes Benz W126 or SEC. Two searches I do nearly every day.

When I was at the local U-Pull last weekend, I stumbled across an '85 500SEL and it was completely stripped on the inside.....not a single part left in it, including the drivetrain and all exterior trim pieces, bumpers and lights. Surprisingly enough, the body was in great shape....not a single dent, no rust, etc etc. But it's rather sad to see a big S Class, the finest car in it's time, in a junkyard.
