As I have many years of experience restoring w126, w124 and R107/129's this is my first shot at w123. This project is giving me the confidence to tackle my next project an uber low mile 1984 w123 TD wagon. My first revelation has been these are very simple cars compared to w126 but similar in many ways. So here are some pics of the 1984 w123 TD sedan. Mike

Nice work! Can I ask what paint you used to refinish the wheels? I really need to refinish mine, just not sure of the correct silver to use.

I use Mercedes body color "Brilliant Silver" with a matte clearcoat. Easy to get an auto paint supplier to mix it up at a reasonable price. Here is another car with the same wheel treatment.

Looks great!

Can I ask how you restored the carpet on that back parcel shelf? Mine is as faded as yours was but you really brought the color back to life. Or did you actually just replace the carpet on that shelf?

The simplest DYI is to remove the rear shelf, remove the speakers and first aid box, vacuum the carpet thoroughly then dye the carpet covering. As my rear shelf was originally color coded to the Palomino interior and I was dying some seat covers I used the same dye. If yours is Palomino then buy an aerosol can of SEM interior color coat. They have an "off the shelf" color that is really close to our Palomino is "camel". Most automotive paint stores carry SEM products, if they don't stock camel have them order it for you. SEM products dry fairly quick so between coats take a brush and fluff the carpet a bit. The key is multiple coats, trying to do this job with one coat will give you poor results. Mike

Wow, that stuff worked wonders on your seats too! I didn't even know such a product existed. Thanks for the info!

I actually use a water based dye with a spray gun. This is what I do for a living/passion and do it on a weekly basis. I was giving the forum a simple DIY process with common materials at a low cost but best bang for your buck. Dying seats is a total different process which has taken me a few years to develop my technique.

I did the same treatment on my W126CD rear shelf and found the SEM Palomino to be a better match than the Camel. I found that the Camel was just a bit too dark. My local Napa carries a decent supply of SEM products.

Dude this is awesome, keep the progress pics coming. A heat gun will take those marks out of that new hood pad by the way. Are those seats leather?

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try the heat gun on the pad. Yes the seats are leather.

Cleaned some 35 yr old carpets today. Steam carpet extractor cleans deep. The waste water is scary but the interior is fresh and pretty much odorless. Didn't take any before pic's but they were dirty.

Refreshed the instrument cluster, all new bulbs, contacts cleaned, gears lubed and painted the needles. About to button up the dash. Car should be ready for delivery by mid week.

This is coming together nicely. I've always liked the W124s you've done and this one looks just as good.
