sounds like the engine valve needs adjustment. Don't ask my how, I've never
done it on a Mercedes. Perhaps an independent Mercedes mechanic can give
you a good idea. When all else fails, take it to the MB dealer and prepare to
get raped.

My car was making he same noise and it was the automatic belt tensioner. I replaced it in about 20 minutes with the DIY guide posted on this forum somewhere.
