Yep, the “Big SIX O. Thankfully, I feel a lot younger -- the neon-colored costume helps. Sorry for the off-topic photo of my original-owner FIAT (Fix It Again,Tony) on my birthday, but I couldn’t resist.

Here’s a comparison. The two numbers for the FIAT are original and as modified.

ITEM_________SLK55_________X1/9
Year__________2005_________1974
Price_________~$70K________$4220
Weight________3455 lb________1990 lb
Layout______front engine____mid-engine
Top_________retractable_____removable (stows up front)
Engine_______5.4 L V8______1.3 L / 1.5 L 4cyl.
HP____________355_________67 / ~90
Trans.__________7-sp_________4-sp / 5-sp
Rear Tires____255/35x18____145/70x13 , 175/50 x13
Brakes_______awesome______eventually
0-60mph_____mid-4 sec. _____usually
Top mph_______155+______~ 100 finally

In 1974, $4200 was a lot of money for a car. That amount would buy a fully loaded Camero or Buick. That was about the same time I bought my 1st hand-held calculator; an HP35 for around $300.

But the little mid-engined X1/9 was pretty revolutionary and unique. And actually, with the upgraded engine, it is a lot of fun, even after experiencing the SLK55. And it’s difficult to say which one turns more heads.[^]

G'day Gordon,

Happy birthday, you "old bastard" (in Oz, that's a term of endearment, in the appropriate context). From the content of your posts, and the few pictures we've seen of you, I'd never have picked you for 60! You're obviously young at heart.

We didn't see the X1/9 in Oz until 1978. I would have loved to own one, but it was beyond my reach back then. Indeed, on the rare occasions I see one, it turns my head. I've never seen a neon green one; they've mostly been yellow.

Cheers,
---Julian

Happy Birthday.

Great to see an X1/9 again - have not seen one on the road for longer than I can remember. Never had one myself but a good mate did. Great fun car.

What a colour as well - can't see you losing that in a car park or at night [:)]

Happy Birthday![/QUOTE ..]
... ditto ... but watch those sills on an X19 [:0][:0]
Thanks for all your birthday wishes and concerns WRT the FIAT. I belive the Italians invented rust and passed it along to the French, but this FIAT has none. It's led a pampered life here in the dry southwest where we have legislation to ban rust on everything except discarded mining equipment. We have enough iron oxide in the red soil and rocks here. [;)]

BTW -- the neon green and orange are original colors and most of the paint is original. I did make some touch-ups of stone chips with my compressor in my driveway.
